Hi-I'm in the process of purchasing some tig cups to suit my needs, but I am having trouble figuring out which sizes I should purchase.  I plan on purchasing an array of cups, they will be for for both aluminum and steel (mild and SS).  I understand that a gas lens will be needed for Al, but what tradition do you follow that sets the size of the cup, metal thickness ?thanks-
Reply:I have never heard any logic that supports using smaller cup sizes and/or a standard collet body (versus gas lens) to obtain better shielding.A standard collet body and smaller cup size may be useful for welding in tight places, and some cup sizes may be preferred for walking the cup, and smaller cups may give needed visabiltiy, but otherwise why not use a gas lens and a moderate/large cup (#8 = 8/16 = 1/2")?I suppose for tiny welds, you could use a tiny cup and a tiny gas flow rate.
Reply:To figure out which front-end parts you need, first decide the type and thickness of the material you'll be welding. This will help you select which tungsten electrode type and diameter you'll need and, in turn, which size nozzle you'll need. For example, if you choose a 3/32-in.-dia. tungsten electrode  you'll need the 3/32-in. collet and collet body and probably a No. 6 or 7 nozzle. You might check out the Miller site, they have a welding calculator online:http://millerwelds.com/education/cal...calculator.phpAlso, Weldcraft, for example, has accessory kits that include an array of standard collets/collet bodies and the appropriate cups.  And we offer a "pro" kit where we include the gas lense collet bodies as well....  If you tell me what torch you have, I can tell you which standard kit goes with that torch. Here's a good article about gas lenses:http://www.thefabricator.com/ArcWeld...le.cfm?ID=1531Hope that helps!-----------------------Carmen Electrodewww.CarmenElectrode.comand the boss blogs at  www.JoeWelder.comall powered by  www.Arc-Zone.com

Reply:The pinkish ones are aluminum oxide....
Reply:the cup sizes are multiples of 1/16"   so #4 would be  4/16 or 1/4"   #8 would be 1/2 inchTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
