Hello all,New to the forums but have been welding for quite some time.  Doing some engineering of my own and I am making my own control arms for a Pontiac G8.  The material is 1.25 x .120 wall DOM and I am welding in a threaded bung for a heim joint. Now I have seen a few ways of doing these, one being a round weld in the same plane and one being in a waved motion like in this (primitive) picture:It's like the tubing was notched out for another tube but they welded the bung in.  I thought this would add some strength as there is more weld, and it is not all in the same plane so it would be harder for a crack to go along the whole weld.Any thoughts? Thanks in advance,Jordan
Reply:It gives more weld, but proper weld is easily strong enough without that joint shape.  Mainly it reduces localized/concentrated stress risers.  Same reason you see fish-mouths and diamonds on structural frame repairs and splices.
Reply:I would fishmouth the tube.  Stronger, and adds a little attention to detail that is aesthetically pleasing (provided you put down a pretty weld).IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:Or round weld and two extra plug welds. Just round weld is plenty though.
Reply:As long as the weld is done well, a square cut should be fine. The fishmouth does look nice, though, and if there is any question of the weld not being perfect, it's cheap insurance.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
