Reply:I have been off of the pipeline for the last seven years because I wanted to be home when I found out my wife and I were have a baby. I am fixing to go back out and I have been practicing every free minute, working on the 12" branch .375 wall and a the bell hole. You definitely have to practice, practice and then practice some more. Spurwelder is right, your best bet would be to get on as a welder's helper. You will gain a lot of needed knowledge on the process of pipeline welding and the quality of weld that is expected on the pipeline.

Reply:Most pipeline welders work for a contractor and get reimbursed for truck/tool expenses. Most contract rig welders work on drilling rigs etc. hourly rates could be over 100$ hr for contract rig welders. However rig welders working for a pipeline contractor will typically make 40-45hr +14-16hr for truck pay and 100$ a day in per diem. Working for a contractor means they will typically furnish all consumables. Singlehand just means you get paid to run a company's machine and they typically pay 26-36hr no tool pay and some per diem.
