i believe i heard that there is a downhand 7018 rod. can this be true? i've also heard the tankers from cbi have been doing this for years and even have a "test" for it. i'm very curious if anyone here has seen/used it.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Down hand, or down hill? Down hand is flat welding. Down hill is vertically down. I too have heard of WPS for down hill 7018 welding. In my line of work down hill welding will generally get you two checks.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:some pipewelders may disagree on the downhand is flat welding tho.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Downhill welding is sometimes done with 7018, after filling the bevel the root pass is gouged from the back to clean weld and filled uphill.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:yes their is a downhill 7018 rod and yes 7018 has been run downhill for years for seal welds and their is a test for it, their is also a open butt test for 7018
Reply:I was told that down "hill" is vertical started at the top and run downward.  Down "hand" was explained as whether you pointed the rod TOWARD your direction of travel or AWAY FROM your direction of travel.  Down hand was when you pointed the rod away from your direction of travel.  I suppose using that description you might call a vertical weld "down hill, down hand" if started at the top and run downward with the electrode angled upward (puddle being higher than the electrode holder).

Reply:Exx4x electrodes are made for vertical down. Lincoln makes E8015, E9015&E10015 which would be a low hydrogen sodium coating, without iron powder.
Reply:I've done a few downhill 7018 and stainless stick tests, the root was back ground/gouged and then also completed downhill.  Downhill is used a lot on boilers for welding the membrane between walltubes and overlaying worn thin spots on tubes.  As for CBI.  I was on a  tank where the procedure was to fill the bevel uphill with 7018 and then run two or three downhill 'wash' beads to cap.  They insisted on the downhill passes even if the uphill looked snakeskin smooth.  There was a lot of discussion over the need for the downhill but they're the bosses.  This downhill wash was also called for on structural.
Reply:Fill and cap, pipeline, downhill, 7018. He's collected a lot more than two checks.Big F**king HammerJumper cables & 2 marine batteriesJaws of life
