Open Root Plate Questions

Forgive me if this is in the wrong area.Start off: the trade school that I'm going to has all doing open root plate certs (3/8 plate, 1/8 open and land, 6010 root and 7018 fill and cap) My question is how often for a structural cert or in the field would plate be open root. Most guys I hear of with 3 and 4G with SMAW do it with the backing strip.I may be a gringo but I'll out-Mexican your beaner @ss any day!
Reply:Depends on who you're testing for. I tested 100 times open root to each time I tested with a backing plate. 1/8th"  root is too much to suit me. Reply:Usually the intention of doing an open root plate exercise in school is to prepare you for doing open roots on pipe.  It is very rare where a company doing structural work will go to the trouble of certifying/testing to do an open root plate joint.   Butt joints in structural are done with a backing strip or the weld is done on a closed root then the item is turned over and back gouged in preparation for a groove weld.
Reply:The only reason we did open root plate in school was preparation for pipe. However, I don't think I've done more than 3 or 4 real world open root welds on anything but pipeGo Cards!!!!!

Reply:Doing work for a well known company we had to do all moment connections, and splices 7018 open root all the way out.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
