Once done with school I would like to test for shut down jobs out west. I currently live in Florida and can fly round trip anywhere for 50 dollars due to my girlfriend's mother being a flight attendant. Do people do this? Do they bring their welding tools and equipment with them? If so, any special procedures or fees involved with this?Read my welding blog:http://weldeveryday.wordpress.com/

Reply:Come on out. Your right for heading out west for a welding job, there are very few folks out here that pipe weld (Im not kidding)....Just be able to pass a pipe test before you waste your time.
Reply:I'm probably missing something but most guys working shut downs are either fairly local or have travel trailers they pull from job to job. Those jobs only last a matter of weeks most the time sometimes a few months. Hotels, rental vehicle and meals would pretty much eat up your pay..The paper here in Mobile always has welder jobs available.... always. But a lot of guys come in here and can't pass the welding, drug or background tests. We have a lot of welders out of work here.... and plenty of openings..sad but true.
Reply:Unless, you handle pressure better than I did, experience is what you need just starting out, consider fab shop work if its available and you will hear about shutdowns local to your area.Flying to a weld test sounds good but think about it you will land in unfamiliar places, deal with cabs and try to find a decent place to stay and deal with welding test,I have flown to take welding and being out of your comfort zone took some getting use to,Florida has nuclear sites as does GA.,ALA.these refuel every 18 months stay close and get experience, ask questions.I'm assuming you went to school to learn to weld pipe.Good luck
Reply:Thank you for all the advice. I want to go west, but I may stay around here (Jacksonville) for a few years getting some good experience. And pipe is definitely something I went to school to learn, but I have obviously have learned structural. Cant wait to get out in the field!Read my welding blog:http://weldeveryday.wordpress.com/ |
