Hi Everybody just want to share one of my project here...its  a 20 footer storage that was simulated to a container van .i made this  about 8 months ago when i noticed that my art works number are growing and i need some place to store my stuffs....originally i wanted a real container van. but find out that its waaaay expensive than i thought it was so i decided try to make one instead......i used 2x2x1/4" thick angular bar for framing..to make it lighter...for outside coverings i used gauge 24 rib type  pre colored roofing sheets and  for the inside wall- i used 1/4" fiber cement board and  Gauge 18 flat sheets on the roof....for the ceiling  -framed 1x2" metal purring and covered it with 10mm double insulation sheets...on one side i installed a neat 4ftx4ft powdercoated aluminum sliding window and 4ftx5ft aluminum framed fixed glass on one end....for the sliding i used 1"x2" square tubing , alum.sheets and flat washer welded together ..the door railing sysytem is 1x1" angular and some used bearings i acquired from a junkshop....i fabricated the drop lights too using a larger bearings to housed the spotlight type LED bulb....and here it is after two weeks  a cheaper container van look like studio gallery for my artworks hope you like itthanks.MARIO Attached Images
Reply:Thanks. As I said before, you did a very nice job with this. It goes well with all your other projects.I especially like the fact you built your own light fixtures as well as the display stands. Helps tie it all together. I always like it when an artist or designer can work in more than one area. One of my design class projects in school was to design a light fixture that was to go in the building we'd designed as our final project for the semester. It was sort of a "filler" project to finish off the last 2 weeks of the semester, but it was a neat to do something full scale that was useful.I wish I had the ability to visualize art projects the way you do, but that's just not the way I think.Have you got a sign out front and does it look like your sculptures? I think a sign along the lines of your art would be really cool to see and would help show case your abilities. Maybe a large outdoor sculpture. I don't see much on the outside of the building besides the door that shows whats inside.Last edited by DSW; 04-16-2012 at 08:05 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Sorry to here you have to move Ironheart, but hopefully the new local will be even better for you. Awesome lights too. Regulations up here are killer so it really hampers artist making cool lamps. I've built some but they stay at home or are for friends or close clients that get read the riot act and sign a waiver. Pretty hard to mess up lamp wiring but I understand the reg's are there for the dumbest cases. Keep the pick's coming! Bert200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:Those are truly outstanding designs! You could pop those in any modern/contemporary  home or magazine shoot and they would get attention. Two thumbs way up!!!And using glue isn't cheating....it's using an application specific technique that expedites the execution of a task that requires the most efficient method to meet an end.........  Originally Posted by DSWNot much metal work in the light fixture. Some in the model for the building since I welded up the triangular sections with my mig and then brazed the hinge joints after machining the hinges.  I cheated and glued on the aluminum skin.  The American Institute of Architects accreditation group was impressed that we had welding facilities available at the school when they saw the model. ( We had to have all our work done early so it could be shown for their visit) I got all sorts of dirty looks from the faculty when I said I used my own equipment to build the model. .The idea was supposed to be "whimsical" rather than "practical" because I would make most projects too realistic and not "artsy" enough... The idea was a pavilion that folded flat when not in use. The light was to hang in the center. Not the greatest picts because they were scanned from film picts years ago, but It's what I have.
Reply:Nice.  Any in-progress pictures of the pseudo-container being built?---------

Reply:What is the original use for the bearings that you have used for your hanging lamps? I saw one the other day at the hardware store in town that was about 6" in diameter and was wondering what its intended use was. the ball bearings inside it were huge.
Reply:I could guess large electric motors and large machines.

Reply:There are bigger out there.... At an electric motor shop I used to work at, we had some of these bearings with an outside dim of 12", they had a 5lb solid machined brass cage inside, they were a thrust bearing for a big pump.Alot of the bearings we threw out were about those sizes you have in your display showcase. Looks very nice in there.
