I'm talking about std pipe sch 40 2"-10".  I know everybody is hard for sa 200 and there counterparts ie. 300d, 200d, classic i, ii, iii.  But what about all the mechanical contractors, steamfitters (high and low pressure) and pipefitters out there that do repair work and retrofit work.  Ya'll using lincoln dc generators too? Reply:One of my best friends is a 45 year, retired fitter. He says you will hardly ever see a Lincoln on the job in the [chitcagoland] area. Although I was always a Miller fan, I have come across quite a few great deals on Lincoln's, and have become a fan of either brand. I also have an iron worker buddy, who says all you will see are Miller power supply's and Lincoln LN25 feeder's."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Same here,I am in NJ and I have to say I see way more Miller then Lincoln.  The only people I see running miller besides myself is NJ Natural gas, but most of the guys they sub tapping work out to used trailblazers with dual shield.  I only have SA 200's because It was an offer I couldn't pass up but was considering something smaller and more appropriate, since I am not a pipeliner.
Reply:Not a pipeliner. But, can't go awry with either BLUE or RED.  One day, a BLUE (Miller 301TB) and I will have a meeting of the minds....."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Yeah all my buddies that do structural work have trailblazers and love them.  I have a 86 big 40 that welds nice but it's exactly as the name states, BIG.
Reply:Like most others my biggest gripe is the noise of high rpm lawnmower engine blazing in the background.
Reply:the trailblazer is pretty big around here. I have one on my company truck and do quite a bit with it structural and pipe, though I haven't done any wirefeeding with it yet. I see them on many rigs that are geared more towards piping and they say they do ok. for general use, they are fantastic compared to the more specialized Lincoln sa series machines because of all the process options and aux. power optionsfor what the company has me do, even if they asked me what welder I would like to have on the truck I would probly stick with the trailblazer
Reply:I always seen more Miller engine drives on the job site, and could never figure out why. Then I got promoted to the office, and learned why.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Because some goof ball purchasing agent who doesn't have a clue, and only cares about money is buying them!
Reply:We run miller trailblazers at work. Havent had any major problems with them.  We just picked up are second trailblazer 325 diesel. The new model is lighter, smaller, and most of all its pretty quite for a engine drive.PROUD   AMERICAN

Reply:The Millers tend to be somewhat less costly. The reasons the grey Lincoln welders are often preferred is because of the smooth and very crisp pure dc rotary weld current they have.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I like the sa 200's but I find that when welding smaller pipe like 2"-4" the machine snuffs out because you have to keep the fine (voltage) so low. I have an invertec v350 in my shop and that unit is spectacular.  If I had the brains/time I would do what Slowhand did with his 200d. I just checked out his thread and that is one bad *** welder.
Reply:Actually CEP sealed the deal with me buying the v350 because he spoke so highly of it.  Thanks, CEP

Reply:In the shop. XMT 304 inverters and Dynasty's Back of the truck, no power supply. Lincoln. Good pipe welders will tell you they burn 5p+++ better.Local 83
Reply:It's kinda nuts for a general contractor to dump a bunch of money in a production welder when other tools will make them more money. So on the job site you see the smaller machines that are more nimble (easy to hook & move around).Welding shops that do portable work are much the same these days unless they also thaw frozen water lines (used to be good easy money in that stuff)... I don't know how the big 40 Millers liked that thawing business cause none were around here, but it would make the circuit boards in the Hobart 4 & 6 cyl machines flakey after a while. The Lincolns just used more gas & maybe needed some brushes. From old timey days to now with the smaller machines it's all different, the new machines are serious. But I get the whole screaming rice-burner/lawnmower thing. The old machines were annoying & didn't weld all that well, now they weld much better.I wouldn't let the color stop me if the salesman really really wanted me to have it. Matt
Reply:why is it every time i read 5++++ i feel like i am stuttering.  this post says it all.  that is just about all those old relics are good for.   it must be  love of some sort to lug around a half ton of welder to get a couple of hundred amps of dc power.   what do they do when they need to operate some power tools,  run a cord to some other welder's trailblazer.  i suppose they are good for the dualie market.  lol has anyone ever seen a six pack of lincoln inverters on a site?   now you hater's don't get me wrong, i am a fan lincoln electric and wish i was fortunate enough to have bought some of their stock five years ago since it has appreciated some 240 percent since then.  during a recession!   they have not had a layoff since 1948.  pay a great dividend.  do share buybacks etc.   they are such a successful company that universities use the study of leco marketing and management in their business courses.http://www.fool.com/investing/genera...ed-higher.aspxhowever, down at this level all you hear about are pipeliners and their antique machines and how they were lucky enough to get some parts from dick's donuts and lincoln parts in buttfxxkkansas.   is it one of those things like they don't make cars like they used to? (they don't is right, they make them much better)   or those harley purists that long for the days of pan, knuckle  and shovel heads.  haha i'll bet harley doesn't.   (former owner of a shovelhead here, 74 FXE, ton of money in it.   sold it to some germans and bought a zx10 and never looked back.when i see one of those old machines i think of things like...rivets, gas lamps, hand crank phones, bows and arrows...
Reply:Like I said. I like using my personal dynasty to Tig and stick with. And I use it at home for everything. Aluminum intercoolers for twin turbo Ls1, to practicing for tickets. At work in shops I like my XMT's. Millers Bobcats in the field........ Doesn't rev up half the time when I strike a rod. If I am whipping a slightly while gap it goes out, the OCV droops to fast or low. I personally have a lot of problems with the arc when doing open root welds. But Lincoln Rangers I hate lol same problemsNewer Lincoln 200D and 300D welders work pretty damn gravy. Old short hood sa200's are just as good, but only in it is in great working order. If it half assed don't expect much. This is my experience from welding open root heavy wall pipe. Not structural or thin sheet. So .02Local 83
