Here's the situation, i have a 1" X 1" stock bar to weld on a 1/16 thick tubing walls, i know im gonna have probleme with the tubing because of all the heat, but i want to know if i pre heat only the tip of the stock bar (wich will be welded to the tubing) and then start welding is a good i idea? I mean, to me its sounds logic that if the stock bar is already hot, i will have to stay less time with the torch arround that tubing to get a good fusion ?Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:I would start at about 100amps and tacking without filler, if possible. start puddle on the heavy stock and I think of it as "pushing" the puddle onto the thin stuff. if it takes forever to get fusion, turn it up.with filler rod I would lay some 3/32in there and weld normal. nice tight arc will get you there no problem
Reply:Thanks 92DLXMan, i would like to know if in your comment you consider pre heating or not at all ?
Reply:Keep in mind the heat from the stainless angle iron when heated up will/may conduct (transfer) to the tubing when/if you preheat.  What I would do is lay my filler wire between the angle and tubing and "favor" the thick part (angle iron) with the most direct heat input from my tungsten.  This (holding/placing the wire thus) essentially adds thickness to the tubes so to speak.  Of course you are not going to be hanging out or favoring the tubing with a lot of time from the tungsten heat input (you all ready know that).  Pointing the tungsten at the point where it touches the angle iron will melt the angle iron and filler wire and the heat will easily (fuse) melt the thin wall tubing.  Don't know how long your welds are, but the longer you weld the more the heat will be input and stored up, causeing that thin tubing to fuse/melt even quicker as you go at it, so... Move around on the welment, if the stops and starts don't bother you or your customer.  Or just make all your tie-ins so perfect, nobody will ever know!If this is bad advice, I'll give you your money back and deny I ever said anything.  LOL!  Good fortune to you LayoutMan!Some kind of Big Blue constant current welding machineAnother smaller yet, Blue machine (it's got wire in it)
Reply:LayoutMan Oops please replace the words "angle iron" above with "stock bar"?  I miss read your post.  But my proposal/procedure to you remains the same.  I just thought of an analogy, though it may be a poor analogy (not so sure I know positively what an analogy is).  Here it is any way; from the science fiction welding journal: If you look at the 1" stock bar as the Bar-Barians (because that is what you are contending with here) as the evil life long enemy of the "Tubinites" (thin tubing).  The Tubinites have called in a strike force from the tig torch napalmers to lay down a heat attack in the area to get the Bar-barians to cooperate with the Tubinites.  It is realized by the Tubinite leaders closest to the Barbarians that the tig torch napalming with blow holes in its own units unless a protective "unifying" shield, "The Filler Wire Force Field Shield" is brought between the two!  Success in the battle will be brought about with the direct drop is placed mainly on the Bar Barians and the filler wire shield between the Bar-Barians and the thin Tubinities, sustaining some/most of the heat attack.  When everything cools down there will be Unity in the Welding Galaxy again!Disclaimer:  Not an analogy at all, just a sorily written piece of fiction based on science.Use the Shield Obe Un fitter! Some kind of Big Blue constant current welding machineAnother smaller yet, Blue machine (it's got wire in it)

Reply:One inch bar stock to 1/16" wall thickness.  Is it possible to include a 3/16" or 1/4" tube pad?  Inch and a half square welded all around or maybe inch and a half by two inches welded on sides only.
