I was told that it does work, and he is asking $100.00 for the welder.I am sure some one here could give me some in put on this welder, Yes, No, or walk away fast...
Reply:It would be OK for a conversation piece. But a tapped welder to use would drive me crazy!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:For a $100, if it works it would be a nice introductory AC welder! Those were marketed as simplistic for Farmers and other entry level welders in there day.Farmers often left them sitting outside where it was handy as the cables always seemed too short. They are tough machines! Plus they are copper wound not aluminum!True, there are better newer machines on the market but fine for a person who is not a big hurry, need the fanciest bells and horns AC welder.(IE the average Joe who wants to try and isn't sure, it will probably fit his needs.
Reply:$100 is probably top dollar for one of those in my area. $50 to $75 is about what I usually see a plug machine like that going for. It's probably not a bad little AC only machine, and it will certainly get you going inexpensively. I had an old Craftsman not to dissimilar to that for years. I bought if for between $50-75 ( I forget now it's been so long ago) and sold it for $50 so I can't complain. It ran AC electrodes quite nicely and we fixed a bunch of buckets and stuff when we didn't have anything else. 180 amps AC only is a tad on the low side compared to many AC only machines, but it's more than enough to do 1/8" electrodes which is usually the biggest we ran 90% of the time.If you are looking for an inexpensive machine to get started in stick welding it will be fine. Are there better machines for just a bit more? Generally yes, but you really won't gain a whole lot unless you go up to AC/DC. If you can get it for closer to $50, chances are you can sell it later for what you paid for it. Even if you spend $100 and keep it a few years and sell it for say $50, your "rent" on the machine is negligible. Plug machines like this don't tend to sell as well as newer tapped units like the Lincolns with the rotary switch to change settings, but they work exactly the same. You just turn the dial on them vs moving plugs. just understand you may have to wait for the right buyer for an older machine like this if you eventually want to resell it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:A lot depends on your location and I understand some welders go for a bit more in parts of Florida.  In Virginia, that's probably a $50 - $75 welder, assuming the leads/clamp/electrode holder aren't the greatest (based on the pic). A fellow member got a nice old Marquette 295A model 350BB for $100. with lots of lead.  And there was a Forney for $89. with leads and a twin carbon arc torch. http://shopfloortalk.com/forums/show...t=38673&page=4"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:This Forney was $50. Nice welder and even welded aluminum better than that century using the miller spark box.My kids play with it now. Reply:Thanks for all the info, I am going to just pick me up a new DC / DC unit. This area is not the best when it comes to finding nice older welders, all I have is time but I like to spend it in the shop... not on craigslist.
