Why are the Good Deals just Too Far Away?Like this $110 offer of oxy-acet torch with 2 charged acet and 2 charged oxy cylinders and a cart !!7 hours away! Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:You live in the wrong place. Just pack up everything and move 7 hours away. Then you will be smack dab in the middle of where the good deals are, where you can then take advantage of them when they happen. Of course right after unpacking the last box and getting settled in, you will find a good deal being offered in Ottowa. The good deals aren't too far away, you are. How far is 7 hours anyway? I measure distance in inches, feet, and miles, I guess you measure differently in Canada although I thought it would be with metrics not time.Last edited by Bistineau; 08-15-2011 at 02:00 PM.

Reply:Yes, I'm not located in the industrial hub of Ontario but I'm central in Ottawa - 2 hours to Monreal, 4 to Toronto.  And things do come up here... yesterday I got 100 ft of #1 welding cable for $50.Today I got a Lincoln AC-225s for $50... yes, it works!Yes, $50 is my lucky number this week. There's a welder posted about 1 hour away 230AC/140 DC for $165 - not too bad but no leads!  I offered $90 cause it's going to cost $100 (maybe $50) to put leads on that.  I may get the call in a few days because the seller is in the middle of nowhere in Quebec and most folks want to buy a welder that works when they get it home. However, generally Quebec prices are retail+ for old junk - what are they thinking?Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:You already have an ac/dc buzz box Rick, albeit a Sears. Why buy another cheap buzzbox? That Oxy set up is old with very small bottles. The only thing you'd need that for would be heating. An angle grinder with cutting disc will serve you better for the small scale cutting you may have to do.Last edited by snoeproe; 08-17-2011 at 07:31 PM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Reebs-  Having formerly lived in Seattle, WA and Pittsburgh, PA (giving me a pretty good idea of what happens to cars in OH) I can attest that they would be well worth the flight out, and tow back on a U-haul truck.  I was very tempted to bring one back to the east coast with me.  Rust is ABSOLUTELY minimal.

Reply:Paypal is 3% approximately.  the minimum is like 25 cents so its not a big deal...  paypal takes about a week to setup as u have to wait for deposits to be verified etc.   getting paid is easier than paying someone else with paypal....   I just signed up for a couple of android apps for taking credit card directly.  fee is about the same 3% per transaction...  They do send a free reader that plugs into the phone to swipe the card too.Oh, don't depend on your math for power requirements.   My airco has the almost the same max current requirement as a Dialarc 250 but puts out almost twice the welding current.  not sure how that all works but it does.   maybe its something to do with more copper the less power required???  its beyond me thoughLast edited by soutthpaw; 08-18-2011 at 09:39 AM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Soutthpaw thanks for the Paypal info... doesn't sound too promising if both the Seller and the Buyer don't already have accounts. Is your Airco a transformer-based welder like the Dialarc 250?You imply that with your copper comment.  I have noticed that the max input current draw seems to vary with the Idealarc 250, older round top units drawing 70 amps, new one drawing 86 amps.  I don't know when the copper to aluminum wire transition took place and how that might play as a factor.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Rick,Reality check, you live in Ottawa where all they produce is red tape, hot air and paperwork.  No wonder you don't find many deals on welding equipment. Looks like you are getting addicted to the "deals" out there.  Remember it is not a deal unless it is something that you want and need, to do what you want to do.  Buying bargains that don't advance your welding abilities beyond what you already have is just going to fill up your garage with old, similar welding machines.Unless you plan to open a second hand welding equipment store... hey maybe that might work where you are.Hope you find that ultimate bargain soon."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25

Reply:Rick, speaking of good deals.  I needed a big mig machine so I got to prowling craigslist and ebay. I found this one site tools by Jax or something like that.  This site will pull tools from all craigslist in the US.  I scoured it everyday as there were welders being posted on there daily.  I found a Lincoln Power Mig in St louis,Mo which is three hours from my home. I wrote down the tele number anf kept looking.  Then I found a Lincoln Power Mig 300 in like new condition with a Python gun for alum welding.  It was listed for  ...asking 1600 dollars.  It was in Oregon and I live in Indiana.  I called the guy and we spoke about the unit and he told me it was bought new in 2007 for a alum handicap ramp bid and was used only one time since for a small steel welding job.  We spoke about the unit a couple more times over the phone and a couple emails. We both checked on shipping and came up with Fed Ex fteight for 485.00.  I offered him 1800 bucks shipped he accepted.  I gave him my credit card number and he shipped it via fed ex freight.  He emailed me the tracking number and I followed the tracking until I went to the local fed ex freight faciltiy and picked it up.Broght it home, unpackaged it and found to be in like new condition, with three spools of alum wire, ext long power cord, python gun, extra liner and many consumables.  I switched the power plug in to what elec service uses and have been using it every day.I am very happy with my deal and welder. Thats my craigslist story.RandyLincoln Power Mig 300 with PythonLincoln SquareWave Tig 255 Hypertherm Powermax 45 HH120 w/argonGood for you netman!I think that Lincoln Power Mig 300 was the predecessor of the Mig 350 that retails for 4,589.00The value of that welder to you $1315 justified the $485 of freight charges. Now consider a used Lincoln Idealarc AC/DC 250 weighing 375 lbs.... that means big $ to ship.Depending upon age and condition, they tend to range in price from say $250 to $900.So a local deal at $400 can be a lot better than far deal than $250!Here is where a deal on a light weight inverter can be way better - because of lower shipping changes.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Shipping weight for my welder was 370lbs.  I bought a 2011 Yamaha F200 outboard from Louisiana and it cost 500 bucks shipped. Its shipping weight was 800lbs.Lincoln Power Mig 300 with PythonLincoln SquareWave Tig 255 Hypertherm Powermax 45 HH120 w/argon
Reply:Hey netman, good on that outboard deal.  Let'scompare that to you welder deal.Weight + DistanceBasically you paid the same ~$500 to ship both. The 200 hp engine weighed 800 lbs, almost double the welder but the shipping distance was about 1/4 that of the welder.ValueThe welder cost you ~$1300 and you paid ~$500 to ship it.  New Welder price = $4,600The outboard cost you ~$??,??? and you paid ~$500 to ship it, New OB price = ~ $20,000?What's $500 to ship a $15,000 - 20,000 item like your new 2011 OB...peanuts.Yet for other smaller value items, shipping can be a major deal breaker.Last edited by Rick V; 08-19-2011 at 04:55 PM.Reason: made some mistakes on weightsRick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:Thanks forehire... useful cross-border info.I wonder if Fedex or Purolator charge brokerage fees?I don't believe that there are brokerage fees with USPS.It's a mute point because most these carriers wont handle anything over 150 lbs.; for that type of weight, freight is the way to go... wonder if they charge brokerage fees?I have only come across one US company that are PUSHED the fact that they were registered as Canadian brokers and that they shipping charges included brokerage... to entice us Canuks for sure.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:Shipping/Brokerage/Taxes at the border are the huge deal breakers living in Canada.  You guys are really privelidged(SP?) to have all the deals you have with free shipping and all that nice stuff.  I often have stuff shipped to the a US address and then go pick it up.  I find that items under $200 and the Canadian Border Services Agents will not pull you aside for taxation.  Declaring another over $200 typicall they have pulled me over and charged me GST OR HST on the item. For a $3000 welder this can add quite a bit of extra cost.  Usually costs me about $30 in fuel, $6 in tolls, and $5/package for the US address place.  In addition to the taxes you end up paying on slightly more expensive purchases.A little pro-tip is that is you ship VIA USPS there is no brokerage fee because they have an agreement with the Canada Post.  So if you buy stuff off ebay and order to your Canadian address, avoid UPS like the plague.  Always go for USPS.
