Reply:6 5/8" pipe, .75 wall thickness  6010 root and hot pass, it took 4 passes with 3/32 7018,(2 side by side, then 2 side by side.  then 3/32 7018 stringers. all uphill except the hot pass, (my stringer picture is upside down. lol)  4 bends and xray.
Reply:Excelent!Good for you.I have done very similar tests myself, 2", sch 160, 6010 root, 7018 fill and cap.All up as well.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:One thing i can see is that you welds need to overlap a bit more so it will look a bit better.
Reply:Glad you passed! I don't mean to start a fight or anything, but I'm surprised you passed the visual. Maybe it's just the picture, but it looks like an excessive amount of undercut on your cap.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Pass is a pass, it's not a beauty pageant lol. And the little bit of undercut looks acceptable to me looks like the lighting might be contrasting, nothing a file can't fix. Your root looks real good.

Reply:I guess I should add, Im not nor have i ever been a professional welder, as a matter of fact I have been self employed since 92. I am a much better fabricator, silversmith and engraver than welder. ive got 10+ years with a tig, mig but never had much use for a stick. Anyway oppertunity knocked and I had a couple months to make freinds with a stick welder and I got the job. That having been said, I am addicted and now want to git really good at it!! I will git to work with some guys that damb shure know there stuff I am excited about learning some new skills!!!!  Im posting a pic of what i really do so I dont come off like a flake!!!   Attached Images

Reply:Grats on passing!I have a 6G test coming up in a few weeks. The weld tech gave me a set of coupons to practice with. The coupons are heavy wall pipe/tube; 2-3/4" OD, 1-3/8" ID and 5/8" wall thickness with each coupon being 3" in length. The test requires a 1/8" open gap with a tig root using ER70S-2 wire and a 7018 cap, welded @ a 45 degree angle of course. The test must be completed in 8hrs and no grinder allowed. There is a visual on the fit up; root and cap. The inside of the root has to be flush or better. (no suck-back). X-ray when finished.Being a Millwright I only weld plate 99% of the time, but this is the only test that the contractor gives and all trades are required to take. I am a tig/stick welder from way back and this shouldn't be a problem.Edit: The contractor also give a D1.1 test for general purpose welding. The 6G pipe/tube test is for pipefitters; boilermakers and millwrights. The Millwrights take the 6G if they are welding on Fan rotors.Last edited by skelley521; 08-26-2011 at 10:36 AM.

Reply:I was thinking of setting the gap 'slightly' under 1/8" inch and planned on 1/8" filler rod using the laywire technique with a push-pull motion rather than walking the cup. I have only practiced the push-pull technique a few times and it seems that the root has less chances of suck-back.When I walk the cup, it seems that if I don't travel to far side-to-side that I dont have a problem either, but sometimes I get rolling and daydreaming and wahla...suckback...lol.Any suggestion claymans13?
