I don't have much experience using barb connectors on air hose.   I am using Goodyear (Horizon) 3/8 inch ID rubber hose, rated 250 psi, running at 90 psi.  I did use a worm gear type hose clamp, the common one you might use on your car, but it intermittently leaks, depending on how I stress the connector.   I have thought about getting a different hose clamp, maybe a smaller one.  I have thought about two hose clamps.  Maybe I should use a different type of hose clamp.   But I figured someone here would know.I looked on the internet for instructions or advice, but came up empty. On a kind of related question, how do you make this "safe", in terms of not having sharp edges on the hose clamp that might scratch something. This question is loosely related to welding in that I use my air tools to grind welds.  ;-)Thanks in advance.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge

Reply:Get one of these http://www.buyweld.com/gas-equipment...pair-kits.html I forgot the crimping toolhttp://www.amazon.com/Milton-1626-Ho...d_sim_sbs_lg_2Last edited by BD1; 12-28-2013 at 05:22 PM.
Reply:Never really trusted those for air where pressures can go to 175 psi. They are fine on O2 and Acet lines though..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I know this is a dumb question. I ask lots of those but are you sure your barb is for 3/8" hose and not a smaller size?---Meltedmetal
Reply:We use a crimp style clamp at work - they hold up wellenough that i use them on oil lines on bikesThe main thing is not to panic or get excited Bobcat 250, X-Treme 12VS,  MM211Meltabo, Milwaukee,Porter Cable,Dewalt,MakitaVictor O/A, Ingersoll-RandEvolution Rage2, 40 amp PlasmaLincoln 225 AC/DC

Reply:Let me rephrase that. I just don't trust most of the guys I've seen install those cheap crush type fittings. After you get wailed on by a hose or hit when a fitting comes loose, you tend to err on the side of caution..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I've repaired air hose with this style of clamp before and had great luck.  Much lower profile than a band-type clamp and pretty easy to install, just crimp with a pair of end cutters and you're done.

Reply:If you use the worm gear type hose clamp, be sure it is sized for the O.D. of the hose you are using. If it is too large, then there is not even pressure all the way around, mainly in the area where the screw adjuster is. It can cause leaks from either side of the adjuster. I have seen some guys get hose clamps for 3/4-1" hose and wonder how come it doesn't seal good on the smaller hose.
Reply:Originally Posted by DSWPersonally I hate hose clamps on air lines. That said I keep a couple sets of hose barbs and clamps in my air tool box for emergency repairs on air hoses at the job site. Typically if I must use hose clamps, I'll run them down fairly snug, then mark where I need to shorten up the clamp and remove and cut the clamp to length. Then take the grinder to the edge and remove as many of the sharp spots as possible, trying not to make the clamp too short doing so. Then I typically wrap the hose clamp with rubber splicing tape or electrical tape so things don't get caught on them.As far as the hose not sealing all the time, that might be due to the age of the hose. When some hoses get old, they get soft and expand. Then they don't always seal to hose barbs well. I've also seen them loosen up if the hoses get hot. Typically when running big air tools like jackhammers off screw machines nonstop. The hoses get really warm and start to soften, and the hose clamps and barbed fittings don't always hold well with older hoses.

Reply:Some barbs are not compatible with all types of hose, often a hose will have a manufacture specific barb, some do not require any clamp whatsoever.Briggs weldnpower 225/210/cvLn-25 suitcaseMillermatic 130
Reply:If the barb and hose are compatible there should be no need for a clamp. It takes a fairly good push to install a 3/8" hose to a 3/8" barb. If the hose is not installed tight to the collar on the barb it is not on far enough. I do not know about other areas but here in B.C. gear type hose clamps are not allowed on air hoses or at any hose connected to a regulator on oxy/fuel or shielding gas. the only clamps other than crimp type collars are the oetiker ear type clamps that must be crimped on
Reply:Oetiker clamps are amazing.  I've had too many leak issues with standard worm gear clamps.

Reply:Use stainless tie wire, wrap it around twice and twist the ends to cinch it up. It'll never leak.like thisLast edited by MikeGyver; 12-30-2013 at 10:10 PM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:Originally Posted by Stick-manAs usual, good advise. Just cut the hose off a little, the soft part, and redo it. The barbed fitting should fit tight, or you can put a little RTV gasket sealant on it.I use this type of clamp. You do need a special tool to clamp them, but they end up very low profile so they don't get caught up on everything. And I still wrap them with electrical tape, just because…..
