has anyone ever attempted to make a from scratch sheet metal intake manifold? i would love to try. gonna try and buy a used bridgeport to help...heres a cool story below about Wilson Manifolds i learned today from my boss.....so i was talking to my superviser today, i am an operator of a natural gas field in alaska, my boss is the Leap Operator, i was talking to him about my interest in buying a mill, he was wondering what i could make on a mill, i mentioned a few things, one of them being cylinder head repair. i says 'i could weld up a cracked head, throw it on the mill and resurface it.' my boss, dennis hails from ft lauderdale florida, he started talkin, he said one of my best friend keith wilson when i was younger, his brother started out sweeping the floors in a machine shop, he remembers the storys they young man would tell him about getting a job in the machine shop in the evenings when they were all hanging out, he said that the owner of that shop took a likin to him and started to train him in machining, according to dennis this shop was one that did porting jobs for nascar racers at the time, the shop had found a way to port and machine heads better than anyone else around, well the your wilson worked there for awhile and eventually found a better way to port the heads or whatever else he was doing and went out and started his own shop. if you are in the hot rod community you know the name Wilson Manifolds. i thought i should share this little piece with you guys, beginners and vets. this story has sparked a passion for me to aquire a mill. i bought a lathe last year and have made money selling parts to the company i work for. i want to make one off parts for auto and motorcylce guys, hot rodders what have you. little custom brackets, plates, covers, whatever.....look where wilson started, now look where hes at, and to verify the story the boss told me, cause he thought the business wilson started was wilson heads or something, i googled wilson manifolds, sure nuff   ft. lauderdale FL.....wow small world.i had told the boss to that i wanted to try and build a sheet metal intake manifold.Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication

Reply:yup, nothing to it, lol.  The key now is to make one truly affordable.  Issue with that is, time is money and no one works for free.   1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:I did....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I have built a few for different motors and combinations. They are time consuming and don't bring in enough money to really cover the time involved.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...done-somewhere
Reply:One off stuff is difficult to make money at, as you have to have a different customer for every piece. What you really want is to make one manifold, but make it a lot. Telling my kids that people. Become rich not when they can sell something big, but when they can sell something affordable to every one. One off stuff is much more fun though. You will not do surfacing of heads on a milling machine though, nor porting. Welding heads is also a fairly specialized are, it is not just striking an arc of nickel 99 not he casting and calling it a day. Look up a process called furnace welding. I looked into doing this years ago, and found out it is not really worth it for me, YMMV.
Reply:Lots of aluminum heads that you would think were too far gone to save have been welded back up and resurfaced. It's possible to cut heads on a bridgeport but not really practical. You could do valve seats and cut intakes down to fit, even limited boring on some engines (smaller single or twins are easiest).
Reply:Well I just watched multiple videos of heads and engines being machined on a bridgeport....pontiac 400 was being bored. And some alum head was being recut after welding up multiple cracks.... so it can be done. They did have some special bore master head or somethin to bore the pontiac v8Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication

Reply:Wilson makes their money by building and selling to the biggest names in motorsports and engine builders. Which in turn helps sell to the smaller guys. That was not done by one guy. His success is due to hiring the best engineers, designers, tuners. And providing them with top of the line equipment. It takes more than beautiful welds on aluminum to sell 3000 dollar manifolds. Their nitrous stuff is also beautiful.
Reply:Right that is now..but the story which is somewhat inspiring is how wilson manifolds got his start. I thought it was cool that all the way up here in alaska sitting at a table at 6am with my boss he had a story about it.....haha I mentioned I would like to attempt a sheet metal manifold and he told me that story. That he grew up with the guy. Thats all. I know now that he dont do a thing except cash checks and prvide the BEST equip available....but when he started.....what made him what wilson manifolds is today.....a young man after school sweeping floors in a machine shop.....thats inspiration my friendMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:I did not mean to take anything away from you, your story, or Wilson. I was simply just trying to add to your toolbox.
Reply:no no i get it man, you are right, thats the wilson of today, but like i said that little tidbit i found inspiring, and odd that my boss of all people haha knew the guy. i can only imagine what it was like back then when he started. or when it all blew up and now they are a staple in the race community. cool stuff.....Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
