Looking for some ideas on what to use for a low cost welding rod oven. What do you use??Dave
Reply:Are you looking for something for code work or just a way to help keep general use rods dry? There's a big difference between the two.For code work nothing but a real rod oven is going to cut it. You can reduce the cost by using a smaller oven rather than a large one..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I have a friend who uses an old mini fridge with a 50-100-150 three way bulb (I dont think he knew how much he would need to make it work) he uses expanded steel shelves it seems to work but its more of a regular use item for him, I just keep mine in tubes since alll of mine is hobby welding I dont really worry about it and if I need to dry some out I bake them in the Father in laws shop (kitchen style) oven. they used to use it to powder coat small parts but not been using it at all lately.added-i put mine in a roasting pan with drip tray, I have never looked in it but figure why leave a mess if there is one.Last edited by Ryf; 09-22-2011 at 08:50 AM.Hobart Handler 190 Century 90amp on FluxCraftsman 200amp buzzbox
Reply:For general use I know several guys who open a fresh can and then immediately vacuum seal the rods in smaller packages for storage rather than use an oven. They bundle them up in 1lb to 5 lb bundles depending on what kind of work they may have coming up. Several also use the o-ring sealed tubes for when they open the vacuum sealed bags. I've also seen any number of guys with the old fridge/ light bulb set up. Personally I usually just use rods that don't require an oven and keep the rods in the O-ring sealed tubes for average work. I only buy small  sealed quantities of 7018 or other rods that need an oven  for a specific job and use them up. Any extras are stored over night in the sealed tubes and after the job is done go in the "junk" rod tube for  friends to practice with or for getting the machine tuned right before I start the job..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I was figuring on using small 1 lb packages for the same reason, us them up and not have to worry about the oven but the fridge and oven ideas are something to keep in mind for the future. Thanks guys!!Dave
Reply:Has anyone tried a large ammo can ?  There is one that is about 2 feet tall and about 14 by 10 the other way.  I want to say it was for artilery shells maybe.  Could put a "goldenrod" type heater in itperhaps.... (?)T

Reply:Plastic rod tubes with some desiccant in them will work for 5  lbs of rod at a time.If you want to take it a step further, you can get a nice compact 10 lb stabilization rod oven from Lincoln for around $160.http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...incolnElectric)JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Not to highjack this thread but what is the minimum temp a rod oven should be?
Reply:Water boils @ 212 degrees sea level basically. Most if not all the ovens I have seen keep temps from 300 to 350 on average.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
