I am new here an need help on what ideas you guys have on making a jig for a bumper. I need something where I can make several of these bumpers. These bumpers are for polaris rzr. Any help is appreciated guys. I am starting to make these an sell them
Reply:Anything you can come up with. What works best for you, How many are you wanting to do and how much you have or want to spend on a fixture? There are anywhere from very complex surface plates to a simple piece of plywood. Not wanting to come off as a smartass that's it in a nutshell. Google jigging fixtures, surface plate, stuff related to this field may give you a idea. Are you making them for Polaris or aftermarket? Reply:If only a few parts i would probably use plywood and 2x4's and 1x2"s...  If going into production I would probably make a steel fixture.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:I am gonna go out on a limb here and assume you already have process in place to make certain the parts are cut and bent EXACTLY!! the same EVERY time. If not that is step one. No amount of jigs will help if your parts are not samey same  every time. That said. It looks like the very front is flat, I would build on that. Simple bits of flat bar and angle tacked to the table as locating tabs. Next, the down tubes could be placed and rest in cradles made from pipe. Finally, the bottom plate could be put on a plate with bits of round stock to act as alignment pins to the bolt holes. This part I would hinge to the table to be allowed to fold down when not in use.Put front tubes in. Tack. Down tubes in. Tack. Plate in. Tack. Remove and weld. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:Lots of 1" angle pieces(looks like 12) and a steel table that you don't mind sacrificing."Make a bed" for the bumper, lay in your cut, notched, bent pieces and weld away.Kinda hard to describe."Suspend" the completed bumper over the bench with a few pieces of round rod(minimal). Take heavier round and the angles cut into 1 1/2" long pieces and create saddles to just beside the joints to be welded.Tack them to the table(heavy tack). When you cut the original support rods away it should lay in there perfect.....supported on each side of the welds.Add clamping tabs as necessary.Nice design.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)

Reply:Hey, my MAMA can weld circles around yours !  Uphill and downhill !    She has one of those DESIGNER purse to store rods in too !
Reply:Bd1 that's great I'm glad she can. Thanks for help bud. Have a great day!
Reply:All of the above ideas, I also incorporate quick clamps or screws to hold components in place.Tim Beeker.

Reply:Build one.  Then you will know what to fixture.  Looks like minimal fixturing needed aside from "anchor points".  Consistent bending and fitup are paramount
Reply:Make a original, then build a jig around it with clamping devises of your choice, remove the original and viola your done. Don't have to be fancy at all. I build jigs out of scrap laying around all the time. Just gotta be true when your done. Remember me when the moneys coming in. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:The one in the picture is the original that I have built. I have a understanding of building jigs for flat things I work at a machine shop and I am a welder there. I am a 21 year old college student majoring in a business degree. I have a basic understanding of how to make jigs. My concern was the anchor point an how to make a jig with all of the bent parts in the bumper. Should I just lay bumper flat as a can an build the jig around and the parts that are suspended in the air. Make pieces that will rise to hold them in place?
Reply:What type of clamping devices could I use? At work we always just build the jigs with angle iron an round stock. Butt the metal up against the angle iron an clamp it down with vise grips
Reply:I would build a jig the same way it mounts to the bike, straight up with the base plate on a flat surface. I would also start with a big enough plate that you could clamp to a table, then build your fixture up off of that with your original mounted to it already. Probably have to build some stumpy little legs to it to allow for mounting hardware, or go with a big expensive heavy plate drilled and tapped. Id go for the stumpy legs to keep it moveable.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:That sounds like a good idea to insure that the mounting stays the same every time. But how could I build off the metal plate to be able to hold the metal in place? Should I jus put some pieces of flat stock orAngle straight up off the plate and use these to bump up against the tubing an use to clamp to the tubing? Or would it be just as fast for meTo bend and cut a bunch of the metal and just build it straight off of my rzr?
Reply:use muffler clamps.weld the saddles to angle iron or tube supports from a base.then remove the nuts and the u-bolts so you can remove the bumper. go to stainlessheaders.com and see their part 3 video for building your own headers to see this type of jig.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet
Reply:Nah, to flimsy and time consuming after you got a perfect first one done. I know its hard to envision, but once you have each piece bent and coped perfectly to size it fairly simple. Dam. Hard to explain if youve never done it.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been CowboysThat my problem I'm having a hard time envisioning it. Guess I'm just gonna have to tackle it an see how it goes. Like I said would it be just as easy for me to build them straight off the rzr every time?
Reply:Nah, pain in the but crawling around like a spider all the time and always needing a extra set of hands. Better off by yourself, on a table with a jig and work like a gentleman.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Nah man, that's the hard part. Building the jig, keep it simple at first then weld one together off it. It will "click" what needs to be changed.Just do it.I tried to quote but for some reason it aint workin. tried quoting post 26Tim Beeker.

Reply:No template for the bends. This is the first one I have done and it took some trial and error to find the exact measurement and bends for each piece. But like I said I have the exact measurements and bends that are needed for each piece to be able to duplicate. I am using the rogue fab bender. The od is 1.75. So u would stand the whole bumper upright just like it is mounted to the rzr and form the jig to it that way? I get what your saying with the split tube.
