I'm a new member to the forum but have been using it as a search tool for some time now. I have a question about using a Tig Rig. Here is a good post on it in case you call it something else, http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showt...G.-Welding-101Now it is my understanding that when using the DC Stick welder you are set at DC Straight. My question is if I were to use a wire feed welder with the gas-less flux core setting, wouldn't that give me DC Straight as well? Can I then connect the Tig Rig to that and weld? I've searched on here quite a bit but could not find the exact answer. Any help on this would be great.
Reply:No. It's current control, not polarity you need to be concerned with.TIG machines are constant current. MIG machines are constant voltage. Two different animals.ɹǝʌo ǝɯ lloɹ 'sıɥʇ pɐǝɹ uɐɔ noʎ ɟı
Reply:to explain a little more, stick machines you set the amperage on the machine, and the voltage varies according to arc length, wire machines you set the voltage and amperage varies according to wire speed.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:YES you can do it, your right set your polarity as if with flux core, disconnect the wire drive clamp so its not trying to feed wire. you may need to git creative to hook your tig rig up to the polarity post, put a squeeze clamp on the guns trigger and just lay it out of the way, and your good to go. I got in a spot for a while and had to tig off of a millermatic 185 and it worked fine. What i cant tell you is if its good or bad for the welder but the machine i used still runs fine to this day.
Reply:I think you are confused, the post you link to is basically how to do scratch start TIG using a basic STICK welder. MIG is a totally different animal. You can MIG using a Constant Current (TIG/Stick) power source but you need a voltage sensing wire feederTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:Soouthpaw,That's NOT a totally correct statement.Using a CC power supply with a VS wirefeeder will give very unsatisfactory results if trying the short arc weld. Really only useful for higher amp globular or spray transfer welding. With that said, most of the crackerbox stick welders will not produce the output to use a voltage sensing feeder.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
