I do some work now and again for a local to me general contractor. He inquired if i could install backflow valve theft protection cages for him. I told him that I could. This would require laying the cement footer and installing the cage.My question is, do any of you all build the cages yourself?I have found that I can buy them premade for around $300 and these come powdercoated. I thought that I could probably build them slightly cheaper than that, but not sure if it is worth the time and effort.

Reply:These.
Reply:I would say that the price on those is about as low as you can get and do as professional a job. Just rolling the ends takes special equipment and time. Mac
Reply:@Stickman,Yeah, they're right ... they're EVERYWHERE out here but they're tan!@Sample,the ones out here are 1.5" tube without all those seams.@Tool,You're right ... don't see how anyone can do it less than the commercial ones.
Reply:I suppose profitability would depend on design. You could make a cage from bar stock, round, flat or square, easy to make u-shaped bends and tack straight bars on 'em cross-wise. Add little boxes for the locks. Choice of finish is dictated by what you have for equipment. If you have powder coating gear do that, if not two coats of Rustoleum rattle can paint. What is it about these valves that makes then attractive to thieves? Is there a market for used backflow valves? Reply:WOW! Because, it would be pretty obvious seeing the amount of water squirting out of that thing, REALLY fast. Around here, they are mostly 3/4" and 1" lines. I can't imagine too many getting stolen."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I would be the first to argue that a fool and his money are soon parted. That said, if I set up a box with cards atop it and run game for profit on the street coner of just about any city in the US, I will be fined or arrested in little time. The law that demands such action was written because most games of the type I am offering are rigged (and as such, it is assumed that I am stealing honest people's money). If I ran the same game on a massive scale, I'd receive government sanction, and I would get a governement bailout paid for by the same folks who lost their money playing the game as soon as the punters could no longer afford to play. This, of course, only has secondary attachment to the rental market, and I would be the last person to suggest that theft should be legal. That doesn't make the sentiment raised by Mondo completely unreasonable. It does give us an opportunity to see which part we are playing in the game, though.
Reply:If you would look back you would find that the banks didn't lower the lending standards on their own it was the government and the community organizers (i.e. acorn) that made them. Now I'm not saying the banks are clear of any misdeeds but when the regulators tell them they have to make these loans then it does give them a little wiggle room. The politicians both Dems and Repubs were in on this, somehow this fact seems to have been lost on the vast majority of people. They passed the laws that control the banks so they are as complicate in this as the banks are and probably more so as the banks had tighter lending rules before the Community Reinvestment Act."Liberalism is a mental disorder" Dr. Savage

Reply:first you had better go and see where you are going to put these things. those units are so nice they look like they're in the garden of someone's home in an upscale neighborhood. the places you will end up going to install those things will not be so nice, you might want to bring a helper. i swear no two were exactly the same, we attached to walls, we hinged tops, ends, sides, mixed and poured concrete. i did these in opa locka and carol city, north miami. did them there because the brother's would steal anything that looked like it could be sold or pawned and it is in places like that where you'll find most of your business. places where when the sun goes down you don't want to be there. that is an unfortunate fact of life.looking at those units makes me think they are so nice they would steal those along with everything else. what am i saying; i think. i know. hahaLast edited by fdcmiami; 12-11-2011 at 07:39 PM.
