Ok I know this has been asked before but I just want to know if there is a better solution for my problem. Here's the story. I brought home an old wilton bullet vise that was my grandfathers and its like a 5" jaw, I haven't measured yet but it looks close to 5", on the stationary jaw right behind the jaw face there is a deficit of metal weather it was ground away or cut with a torch I am not sure. At some point in time it looks like someone tried to fill it in with a different type of metal that I have not identified yet. I want to rebuild this thing as it operates really well given its age and my main concern is the lack of metal behind the jaw.O am thinking of tig welding in some filler then grind flush, I have sil bronze and 309L filler and am wondering if this is a structural part of the vise or is it just cosmetic which would allow me to use sil bronze. I am thinking I will bbq this thing before and after welding since I do not have a OA torch and let the bbq cool it to room temp. I will get some pictures tomorrow to show the detail better..Thanks in advance.Roy
Reply:My mind is changing. This might become the working vise. I always thought it was in better shape than this.
Reply:Imo brazing always works better on cast. Tig is just to much concentrated heat and I feel cast welds better with a more broad heat like torch brazing offers. I've done my share of stick, tig, braze and I always grab the torch these days for cast repair.
Reply:The current material might dictate how you do it. TIG is not going to be forgiving of trash left in the weld, specially if it were brazed previously. Brazing would be my first consideration, then stick weld with hi nickel.
Reply:It looks like it is already filled in. If it is then I would first grind it and see if it is in fact already repaired.
