Is there a list of metals that give off bad or lethal fumes when welded? I know zinc is bad but not lethal. Others?

Reply:Isn't welding galvanized steel poisonous? My uncle is a welder and says it is but You can drink a glass of milk to coat the lining of your stomach so it wont make you sick.Or I think grind it would work too.
Reply:That would be the zinc in the galvanizing.stainless can cause problems with hexavalent chromiumcertain fluxes will give off bad fumes, silica dust from slag can cause silicosis, chlorinated solvents are a big big no no when using argon as a shielding gas, makes the phosgene gas talked about earlier. Basically used in chemical warfare in WWI. I had an experience with this but I didn't realize it at the time. Got just a small whiff and instantly felt my sinuses start burning, an overwhelming chlorine smell and had trouble catching my breath for a while, about 2 days after this my kidneys were hurting and on day 3 my piss was pretty dark but I was starting to feel better. I'm lucky I didn't get it worse, it can be fatal and often leaves permanent damage.cadmium plating on steel is not too good for you either

Reply:Like AKmud says that Phosgene gas is absolutely deadly. Chlorinated cleaners/solvents have that. BraKleen makes non-chlorinated also. Reply:In terms of metals, Lead and Cadmium are the really bad ones. Chromium and Manganese are long-term health hazards but not immediately deadly. There are plenty of other toxic metals but most are not likely to be encountered in welding. Always a good idea to wear a respirator and/or have adequate ventilation when welding, especially when you are not sure what the metal is.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:Im in the electroplating business of zinc, cadmium and other metals.  I know the weldors don't like the zinc coatings, but don't complain about it much with our company when taking some simple precautions.  Zinc fumes alone can be safely avoided with the proper respirator, fume extractor or holding one's breath.  Now welding over cadmium plated pieces of steel I'm told, are a totally different animal.  Cadmium is a RoHS substance that is like garlic to a vampire or kryptonite to super man!  Any metal listed in the international RoHS directive, is bad $hit.  By the way, the four RoHS listed metals considered super-duper toxic are Mercury, Lead, Cadmium and Hexavalent Chromium.   The last three in that list are the ones that become vaporized during welding and should NEVER be inhaled, however slight.  Stainless steel when welded, also produces Hexavalent chromium (aka: hex-chrome or hex-6) as previously mentioned by ironmangq.  Many zinc electroplated surfaces are treated (dipped) with what's known as a "chromate conversion" coating (read: "chrome[ate]" as in "hex-chrome") as well as the not so much used cadmium coatings.   So a "chromate conversion coating" of hex-chrome on top of a zinc plated piece of metal is even worse, than just plain old zinc coatings when welding.  I can tell if a zinc coating has a layer of Hexavalent chromium with the "yellow" (gold) irredescent sheen of the metal.  However most zinc coatings are now top coated with a less dangerous coating of "Trivalent chrome" (less brilliant sheen).   Beware though that hex-chrome is NOT totally banned and is still widely used in some applications.  So bottom line is, hold your breath or use a fan that pulls the fumes away from your welding arc, when welding over a plated piece of metal.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:inside the electrode box/can is a material safety data sheet which should list every ingredient and "acceptable" exposure limits. maybe it also mentions the fumes given off from other metals? it's been a long time since i looked at one.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
