In the tail of the symbol there is a "[" Facing away from the rest of the symbol. Can't find the meaning anywhere Anyone throw som light on?G
Reply:It would seem like it was meant to contain information that was never included, a typo.  I would check with the engineer who detailed the drawing.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:That falls under the category of the box in the center row, second from the bottom... Attached ImagesCity of L.A. Reply:That's not going to relate to any kind of welding symbol, being as it is in the tail.  Any weld symbols would be on the reference line.  That [ is going to refer to something other than the type of weld to be made.It looks like the welds in question are being made inside a fabricated C shape, so the [ is likely referring to how that plate is to be fit and welded inside that shape.Last edited by sn0border88; 10-19-2011 at 10:19 PM.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:The bottom symbol means 1/4" weld both sides inside/outside of the channel..However it is put together..Strange weld print for sure.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:That means a full weld across the bottom of a piece of channel iron, the hard way! Just trigger weld to fill in that big gap.
Reply:The proper way is to note in the tail:  "inside profile'  Which means to weld the web and the flanges if it was a stiffener in a beam.  This is not eactly the same but similar in shape.  He also could have put a fillet weld symbol above the line on the full pen weld and it would mean the same thing.Last edited by lotechman; 10-20-2011 at 12:15 AM.
Reply:IDK but there is the fillet weld symbol for both sides already. He could have put the weld all around symbol on the drawing.I've never seen it done this way before.Leo
Reply:The weld line gives instructions for a straight line.  Once the joint takes a major change in direction you must indicate if the weld continues by additional arrows from the weld line or by notating "inside profile" or using an all around symbol.  The joints that have to be bevelled need a fillet on the other side.  The draftsman should have placed a fillet symbol on the upper side of the weld line indicating that the "other" side needed a fillet.   It would have been clear and easily understandable rather than inventing a new symbol and putting it in the tail.
Reply:My first thought was contour of the bead like    )      But its in the wrong place.  Not for a backer,,,,,,Notes are in the tail.   I'm not a mind reader.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:I think you got it right 85cj7boy. See picture. Not easy to show on his print as the short leg could be interpreted as both sides (inside and outside) which he wants a different weld for on the outside of the joint. Also, 1/4" on both sides of 1/4" plate seems like over kill. Attached ImagesLast edited by sanddan52; 10-20-2011 at 01:20 PM.Reason: add detail
