I just passed a 3g welding test on 1-inch beveled plate with a backup strap. you are allowed to run 1/8 inch 7018 only for the root and then start with 5/32 7018 after that. You are allowed only a couple of hours to weld and man it gets hot, so hot that a lot of people that are trying out for the job are failing the test. Some people are cheating and using wet rags to cool down their test and most of them still failed. You are only allowed to weave 1.5 times the rod diameter. I heard from one of the other welders that he thought it was an old Marion dragline weld test. I was just wondering if anyone else has taken this test or one similar? and if so what were your techniques? I was just curious on any information there was on this test.any response would be appreciatedthanksAaron
Reply:The wet rags can cause fine cracking. It happened to my dad on a DOT test. (1" 3G)The next time he took more time and he passed. That it all I know. I hold a 3G unlimited but its for MIG. I turned the welder down as I made more passes.Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:How long do you have to do it? When I tested I was doing a 1" groove in roughly 75 mins. That was with 1/8th and heat was no issue. Before that I had done plenty of plates with 5/32 and I don't recall heat being such a problem... though yes, more heat than 1/8. Cooling it with wet rags doesn't seem like a good idea to me. If it starts getting hot just drop it an amp or two.
Reply:yeah thats how i passed it, i kept turning the welder down throughout the test, they werent too strict on the time but they said 3 hours. The wet rags didnt seem like a good idea to me either so i didnt use them but even the test givers recommended it. |
