What is the best way to splice two power cables together? I have a Century Buz Box with about 6ft of 6/3 power cable, I just picked up about 12 more ft of 6/3 SO for really cheap and would like to splice the the two together. I was thinking about using split bolts and heat shrink and putting the splice in a juction box or something to act as strain relief but am open to other ideas.
Reply:I added some cable to mine cracker box by just butt splicing the indivdual conductors and taping with 3M 33 tape.  Stager the splices so the cable thickness won't be so much thicker where the splice it.
Reply:Split nuts and heat shrink tubing or electrical tape will work, but not as sanitary/professional looking as cable connectors. Reply:Just buy the set of plug and cord receptacle. That'll give you a 12' extension cord. No splicing. No damaging your existing welder.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:You can go to an electrical supply shop and get butt connecters for 4 and 6 gauge stranded conductors.Use those with good heat shrink wrap and a lot of electrical tape and you will be all set.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:Twist the ends together and soak solder into the wires and put heat shrink over it. I have one that is done like that and it is 20 years old and never been a problem.
Reply:I concur, i solder everything i can. Reply:a small piece of copper pipe makes a good inline crimp.2 1/2 inches or so, go in halfway from each end, till the cables touch, use a chisel and hammer to strike in crimps, friction tape then cover with scotch 33 plus..
Reply:Home depot sells. Little aluminum tubes with set screws.  Slide wire in tighten tubes.   Heat shrink over top and for strain relief could put in an electrical box.    Lots of good ideas here.  And all would work
