iron cast and steel welding

hello my friends, i neew here. i am from israel. and i have a question. i have a kracked small block chevy with broken starter housing. i need to weld to there something with thread for bolt. and my question is. can i weld  another steel to the iron castn like a simple nut? or i must to weld a iron cast bushing with thread? thank you.

Reply:Definatelly  use the starter brace . Get an air arc carbon or a copper rod ,I believe 5-16 inch, build in the area around it with nickel rod. You could also braze the area in but it will strip out easier . I wouldn't use a helicoil instead get a keensert threaded insert. This would typically be 3-8 internal thread 1-2 inch external thread . Bolt yor starter on with the 1 good hole then carefully drill out the repair using the starter hole as a guide . Pull starter off and redrill to 7-16 inch and tap it for the keensert . On the keensert there are 4 tabs that you drive in with a driver you can get where you get the insert . The tabs lock the insert in so it cant unscrew.
