Bet you never saw one of these..60" face roller I need to replace both journals on and get the outside surface off it..The key on one side is trashed and the bearing surface on the other is trash also..Sounds easy enough...BUT......The whole face is one big sawblade and really sharp to boot...The roller will be machined smooth again and the customer will install the new sawblade..I decided to cut the journals off in the saw so that would not be so long when dealing with the roller face..Keeps the vibrations down..I cut the journals off then re-centered one end so I could deal with the surface..After getting under the surface it was just as easy to get rid of the saw by hand (GOOD Gloves) with the machine in neutral and the power off..Basically I just uncoiled the saw and deposited it in a 55 gallon drum..The pics tell the story and believe me this stuff is SHARP!!No particular order this time..Next!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Did you by chance ask what they cut with that thing? Any use for the old blade in your shop... maybe just a section cut out of it?Interesting, to say the least.PapaLincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175

Reply:No officer I was not aware that tossing this fine saw blade in the scrap pile was not a good idea. But how was I supposed to know that people would be trespassing illegally, and trying to commit theft of all this wasted metal it's not good for anything. It's just a trash pile. I figured it was a safe place to toss that nasty old saw blade. Oops next time I'll be more careful.Print it as you will need this statement in the morning. But I say soak that blade in salt water, (unless it's stainless) get it all rusty then toss it out. Reply:Be glad your not the guy that has to sharpen that thing. Before it sank in that your turning down the surface... I figured the new blade would be tapped into the spiral groove... now I now sure. Does the replacement blade come as a sleeve or will they cut a new groove? Just curious if you know. You do get all the fun jobs.

Reply:Well zap, short of your description/explanation of what that thing does, I was going to suggest that it was possibly used for permeating pressure treated wood boards/posts. Definitely an interesting application and part design. I don't envy the work that you have ahead of you on that one. Helical groove no less, looks like a bugger to me. Good luck, stay safe, and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Glad they were replacing the blade anyway. Couldn't even imagine that thing on the lathe with the blade still on.My Photos on Flickr
Reply:This thread earns its title.  I was very curious what you were going to show.  I definitely did not see that coming.  If the size of the sharp features were 10x larger, it would look like a prop from a horror movie. Thanks for posting, certainly not something you see everyday.

Reply:Are all these weird and wonderful jobs you get from local industry or from far and wide. As you sure get a lot of them.
Reply:We use surface wrapped saws like that in the cotton gin in a machine called a lint cleaner.  Usually a little bigger in diameter than that one.  Nice work as always!I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Thanks for sharing the pics Zap. Your threads are usually over my head but the pics always help. Ive been trying to get a look at your adjustable roller rig and I think I finally get it. Nice setup and I like simplicity. Thanks again for sharing.Last edited by Insaneride; 06-16-2012 at 12:12 PM.Reason: roller

Reply:Don't understand why they steal the metal in the first place. If its in the trash, could they not just come and ask if they can have it.   That is what I have done in the past and most of the time the shop is more than willing to let me take what I want from their scrap bins.   Around here, they don't get money for it but the scrap places provide free dumpsters and pick up in exchange for the metal.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Nothing better than a healthy dose of tetnus shots. When I worked at Dayton Wire Wheels, we had a problem with them going through the dumpster, picking out scrap wheels, then trying to get them replaced under warranty.  We always punched extra valve holes in scrap wheels, so no one ever got any freebies ... but they would scatter the contents of the dumpster all over the parking lot.  One weekend I hooked an electric fence charger to the dumpster.  That ended it.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
