Anyone use a fume extractor?

All:I was wondering if anyone had any tips they could share in using a portable fume extractor?I just picked up off Ebay a Lincoln X-TRACTOR 1GC, 120V for a 140 dollars. I am surprised that cheap but it is my first fume extractor. Reply:Get the owner's manual from lincoln's web site. Find the code number on your unit,The unit I just repaired had an auto mode. You place the work lead in a clamp on the unit and a sensor inside detects weld current and will turn it on for you and a timer will turn it back off. You will need an extractor Miggun. It has a extra hose around the gun and vents near the gas nozzle to collect the welding fumes. These units and larger ones are now required for welding stainless steel.Just looked up the owner's manual. your unit should have two speeds and the auto mode.Get the owner's manual there are warnings in there about proper operation.

Reply:I use a sawdust collector vented out the window.  I use a large garbage can lid as a hood.  Works for me.  No filter.   DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I use one in the bathroom.. need bigger one....LOL...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:I've been thinking about getting another hose for the exhaust port of my shop vac and fitting it to a piece of plywood fitted to my basement hopper window. I know I'll need a good way to control intake close to the work, with some stiff wire or something attached to the floor joists above.I haven't tried the shop vac yet just to see if it will draw, I may need to make a cone or something.Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 and WP17. 75A AC is for pipe thawing!HH 140 - new addtion 9/2012.I didn't agree, but hoped for Hope and Change.I got change for myself and my family: for the worse.This is the reality of: Barackalypse Now. Reply:thats a great price on the fume collector.   The only time i ever use them is when i have to weld in occupied office buildings or homes with very annoying owners.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
