Snowy day in the northeast so I figured I would pick everybody's brain. I just picked up a 2006 Classic 300D with low hours and was trying to get it dialed in. I have a sa 200 on truck so I haven't been able to toy with it too much just changing the fluids and general maintenance. But here's what I found that perplexed me. when I got the unit the max ocv in 3rd gear was about 102 -103v, and the outlet was about 122. Welded good, but I am the type of person that can't leave anything alone. So I lowered the high idle until I achieved about 116v at the outlet and a max ocv of 93v. Doesn't weld as good as it did at 102 ocv. I concluded that you do not set these machines up like an SA 200. I am guessing that the fact that the fields get excited by an alternator rather than a dc exciter has something to do with it, but I am not an engineer. Any body have any good tips for dialing a classic 300d? Oh, I forgot to mention that the rack is in the factory position, and I installed new T2687 brushes just to start fresh. Thanks ladies and gentleman.
Reply:I set sa 250 the same way. Basically the same machine. 93 ocv is great for down hill.
