Im not sure if Im reading the post right or not (the post on 6010/6011 rods) but it seems ppl frown upon them? Why, because they are not as smooth as 7018 or look as good? just curious, thanks
Reply:Theres a lot of spatter, its harder to get a good looking weld, welds take longer to run and you use more electrodes per joint, and I find that 6010/6011 welds are more brittle than 7018s. Plus 6010 usually takes a motion of some kind, which 7018 does not, you just drag it along. 6010/1 is however unbeatable at putting in root passes on open root joints. I think thats about all its good for, unless you can't get something clean. I hope this helps.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:60 000 psi and as it isn't a low hydrogen rod, it is generally more prone to cracking.  It has applications where it rocks (like any process) and applications where it doesn't rock so much.
Reply:Thanks, I havent run much 6010, but have run a fair amount of 6011, and the spatter is hell, as is removing the flux.....thanks for clarifing that......I love this site, so much info....
Reply:7018 will take a lot more stress from vibration or flexing before it will crack. 6011 is considered farm rod because on the farm we use it to do a field repair where cleanliness is not godliness. it will burn through what it has to to get the equipment up and running to beat the rain and finish the job (hopefully without cracking) and back to the shop where the job can be done right. if time is of no concern do it right with 7018 in the field and save the extra work in the end.  7018 requires a lot of cleanup prep which could add up to hours and may waste valuable working time. as for a bead pattern i always run 7018 in a j or u pattern. some do some don't. it's a never ending argument as to which is correct.Last edited by jbmprods; 11-01-2011 at 09:15 PM.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:jbmprods, im not familar with "j" or "u" movement, I usualy use a kind of "c" motion, or circular motion. Does anyone have a link to a page where I could see the different type of movements (if thats the right term) I have also heard the term stringer and weave but dont know what they are either....    Im gonna have to get some 1/8" 7018 and practice.......

Reply:thanks stick man...
Reply:i agree with the others but i frown on 6011 more then 6010 when welding with dc current becasue 6011s on dc are more prone to arc blowAaron Olsonmiller dynasty 200dx

Reply:6010 is more picky about the machine it is running from than 6011.    If you are using an Inverter welder, don't bother with 6010 unless the machine is designed specifically for 6010...   6011 will run fine on an inverter welder  those rods are also whip movement rods.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I've never burned 6011. I'm not very experienced with it, but my general idea is that 6010 is DC only, 6011 is made for AC but will work on DC also. They're both deep penetration rods. The drawbacks are as have been discussed. The only time I'll use a 6010 is to burn a root into a galvanized joint, then follow it up with some 7018 weld. Someone tell me if I'm wrong here though.Last edited by BlueArc; 11-03-2011 at 04:57 PM.

Reply:i can burn either  6010  or 6011 on my TA185, (1/8 " rod at 85 amps  for vert down)and get what seems to me to be an acceptable bead with either, no difference in my technique..im not sure i could tell the difference ...

Reply:I bought about 12kg of 6010 rods. After that I found out my inverter was not 6010-compatible. I sold it and got a new 6010 compatible inverter. Great machine, but I am still unable to run a decent bead with a 6010 rod. Need more hood time. XD XDMikel
Reply:In my experience, 6011 has a rougher arc and makes more spatter than 6010, even on DC. The only 6011 that I like at all is Fleetweld 35LS (kind of an oddball, just happened to get a can of it cheap), and it doesn't really run that well on AC.If you only have an AC welder it's better than nothing, but give me 6010 any day.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:6010 is supposed to be run with a "whip" correct, is there somewhere on here that would show the whip motion, or a video?

Reply:CEP, well, I learn something every time I come on here, lol.....I always thought thats why ppl didnt like 6010 because they seemed burdened by "the whip" I just assumed that is was tough to run.... as for the videos, how do you find all these, just search for welding videos on You tube or is there some sort of index out there? Thanks for your help

Reply:Fat Bastard, I pay attention to a lot of PEOPLE, someone might just have something of value to pass on, even if they do not realize it. I trust few PEOPLE, I was just curious why it seems some PEOPLE frown upon it on this forum, it was just a question.
Reply:I've run plenty of 6010, and some 6011. The 6011 required less heat, as it's an AC friendly rod. 1/8" 6010 setup for sweet root, is the same amperage for 3/32 7018 fill/cap. 90% of the time.I never drag any rod, likely due to the fact I'm rarely welding flat. There's nothing wrong with 6011, it's just more Pros have nice DC machines, hence the want/need for 6011 is lessened.Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:I would rather run 6010/7010 any day to 7018....if it just wasn't so brittle. and a xmt does great running it.JerodHypertherm 30Miller Syncrowave 200Millermatic 140and a propane torch and hanger if all else fails
