I am thinking I can build a welding table out of nothing but 1.5 and 2" 11 gauge square tube. I have a TON of it, so it would be super cheap to build. I think it would also be handy to space the tubing out 2-3" on the top so that I can also plasmacut on it. I am still a novice welder for the most part and I don't do anything thicker than 1/8".What do you guys think?
Reply:i am a big fan of doing it cheap and using what is in my pile..i think you can make the tubing work. my table incorporates a piece of grating for oa cutting, but i find i reluct to use it for that because cutting will still f up grating, so i cut off to the side. stuff also always falls through so consider that.

Reply:You can make a grate like top with the tubing you mention but the light gauge of it won't allow for strong clamping... you could collapse the tubing. You can always build it like that and if you find it doesn't suit you, buy a piece of plate and bolt it to the top using the existing structure as a frame.Mikel

Reply:My local steel supply will cut whatever you want as long as you will pay the $$$. The good side of that is they will sell the drops at a reduced price. I picked up this 3'x4'x3/8" plate Saturday for $110.00. Ask your local steel company if they sell drops.
Reply:Yes it can be done. We were on a job site once. It was about 3 hours away from the shop, when the job foreman informed us that we needed to Fab and install about 90 feet of additional rail. Of course we were pi**ed but we got it done. Made a table out of 1 1/2" sq 16ga tubing. Squared it up and it was pretty sound. We actually took it back to the shop after the job was done and it got used for a long tine til we trashed it."Him pending para un bending"
Reply:I build a lot of stuff out of 11 ga square tubing. My welding table is made from 1.5x1.5x3/16 for the legs and 1x1x11ga cross braces with 1x2 11ga frame top and a peice of 3'x4'x 14" plate top. Does everything I need to do and is very strong.Last edited by bhardy501; 06-29-2012 at 04:16 PM.Making as much progress as a one legged duck in the middle of a pond, just going in circles.
