Reply:When I was in school, the general one that Cleaver Brooks/Nebraska boiler sought out was the "monster coupon" which if I recall correctly was a 2" heavy wall pipe, beveled, GTAW root, SMAW fill and cap. 6G position. One of the hardest tests people took at the school. Originally Posted by galencwi2" pipe sched 80 6G. Tig Root 7018 cap n fill. Or tig root n fill all the way out. Reply:While you're practicing for the test you should be practicing for the job. The 6G booth test is the easiest weld a boilermaker will see. Do you scratch start, no foot pedal? Do you have a proper clamp so you are tacking in position? Can you handle gaps from almost tight to almost 3/16".
Reply:It's 2 inch heavy wall the wall is almost a inch thick I have 3 chunks about 2 feet long I'm scratch starting it no foot pedal I was going to make one with a good gap and bevel then the other 2 do a bad bevel with a tight gap and a huge gap should I stick all 3 together side by side to mimic boiler tube inside of the boiler ? If so how much gap should I leave next to the pipes ? Reply:There is also 7018 all the way root fill and cap

Reply:I worked at a coal fired generating station as a maintainence welder. For our boiler related tickets we hold 2.25 chrome or P22, typical F3/F4, also have tig all the way. All of our tests are done on 2" sch 160. And if need be we qualify on our heavier procedure for thickness's 1" and over, we only do this test when we know we have a large heavy wall pipe job come up like that. Old sparks is right on with the water wall work, i dont mind it myself, definatly ideal to do the joint from both sides but you can also practice a window weld which in our case is almost always the situation as the skin casing is full of asbestos and they dont enjoy making hoardings and removal for blow outs. Also if you want to become a welder in the ol boiler get used to mirror welding, and squeezing yourself in between bundles and platens! OH and be prepared to crawl in there just after a force cooling when the tubes are still nice and toasty! OH and dont forget the draft blowing your tig gas away! and fly ash. Or crawling in to a nice chemical smell after an acid excursion. In all seriousness i love my job! on the gas combustion turbine side we have our inconel, stainless, and stainless to mild.Just currently practicing up for a large scale job on our loop pipe system, 8" chrome with a 1-3/4" wall, Attached ImagesLast edited by Pressure_Welder; 01-30-2014 at 03:55 PM.
