Extending a kid's bed up

This is a small project, but it shows how handy it is to have a welder in the house.  We were given a twin bed for our three year old.  We wanted to get a second to match -- since we've got another baby due in the next few weeks -- but the model of bed isn't made anymore.  So I came up with the idea of going vertical -- since a kid is going to like that more and it will eat up less floor space.Here's the steel.  My Jeep is only 12' long, but the rack I made lets me carry 20' lengths on it.I'm a hack welder, honestly.  But I don't let that slow me down.I moved my drill press onto the folding-down welding table for the holes for the threaded fittings I was welding in.Doing all the welding on one side of the threaded-hole side warped the uprights.  I used my cheapo roll bender to straighten them back out.Getting closer:The thing I like about my little two-car garage/shop is that right before I started on the bed, I'd been very deep in work on my track car.  As it happens, the next project is a set of wood shelves.  With a little clean-up in between, the garage works okay for wood, metal and automotive stuff.Here's the bed.  And also a picture of the new owner, who was pretty thrilled about his new-found ability to touch the ceiling.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:GASP! A childs bed made of hard unyeilding metal! How will he ever survive...   You do realise you will need to paint the cieling regularly now right?Looks great like all of your projects. The only thing I think I might have changed was to make the lower section higher so you get a bit less head room with the lower bed, and more space for storage underneath. Guess I'm thinking a bit about this because my helper just asked me Iif we can't fab up some under bed storage for his place and we've been tossing ideas back and forth..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Jack, I tried the same thing when my boy was 3. I spent a day working on it, and had a real nice set of bunk beds. The first thing he did was launch himself off the top, and smashed a hole in the drywall, with his head.He was ok... This kid is hard to hurt, but daddy dismantled it immediately.I guess your little guy is more careful than mine...which would not surprise me. My boy does not really understand fear. My girl is as careful as can be, but the boy has to learn everything the hard way... like his daddy...
Reply:I love to see things like this on the board. The creative yet simplistic design coupled with the fact that it will last for generations, makes pieces like this something to really be proud of. Your kids are gonna tell all their friends that "Daddy built this for me" when they come over. My wife shows off our bed to everyone that hasn't seen it yet, she keeps her cell phone pictures at the ready incase it comes up in conversation (sometimes she brings it up herself).
