can't see

i've been welding with a stick for over 30 years.Now  i got a mig and for the life of me,i can't see where i'm welding! All i can see is the bright light  lol  What's the best way to hold the gun and travel with it so i can see the joint while i'm welding? I can lay a decent bead but not where i want it to be because i just can't  see it.

Reply:I have an auto darkening with 9-13 adjustable shade.To be honest,I haven't played with it much,just went from weak to strong.
Reply:I like to push the gun sort of towards me and look down the barrel so to speak doing solid wire mig. Gun is maybe at like a 10 to 15 deg angle towards the direction of travel, 90 deg left/right so it's straight up and down for flat. Adjust accordingly for other positions.If doing FC, reverse this and drag the gun, usually welding away from yourself, again sort of looking down the barrel. Most students want to stand behind the gun or off to the side and try to look thru the nozzle. That simply won't work well. You need to stand and move in such a way that you can easily see where the wire meets the work all the time..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
