I have a few small projects. My Barn is wired for 20a/110V so the welder is going to be a small one.what little Cheap stick welder should I be looking for?Where to look? Can we rent these things?

Reply:I know that I will be sounding like a disrespectful smart alec, but the cheap stick welder you are looking for does not exist.A stick welder, like mine, will not run effectively from a 20 Amp circuit.Good Hunting.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor
Reply:Only 110v stick welders I know of are cheap 90amp Harbor freight unit or a dual voltage inverter unit. Pretty much all stick welders are 220v. Do you have a generator? maybe buy a little stickmate/thunderbolt or lincoln tombsstone and run it off your generator.HH140---------------------------https://www.facebook.com/brandon.pike.9

Reply:whats the max thickness of metal you plan on welding
Reply:You really should start by running 220 to your barn.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:See ''Pipeliners post '' http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...der&highlight=Looks like your twin posted one on 11/18/13  here's my response, I would look at the MILLERS. They are not cheap but will burn stick fine. Here's their Maxstar 150 which we have at work and will burn 3/32 ok. The duty cycle isn't much but will work for you. It is also 115/ 230 volt machine. http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...p?model=M00142Now if you want more machine you can jump up to the Maxstar 200. This is also 115/230 volt machine. More power but more $$$$. http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...p?model=M00142Barn ? Maybe a engine drive . Now you got a generator backup power source. More $$$$. Now if you want to get into tig you can try these. Maxstar 150 STL. http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...p?model=M00152or 150 STH http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...p?model=M00143Here is the Milller site if you wanna do a search on the machines. http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...ng-Discussions

Reply:My local rental place has welders for rent. The small 110v capable machines they rent won't do more than 1/8", but the do rent a small gas powered DC stick unit that will do a nice job on heavier stuff. They get $36 for 2 hours min and $88 for the day for the machine. The Maxstar is a nice choice if you have to use 110v power, but you are still limited on what you can do because of the 110v power. On 220v power that's not a problem. 220v transformer stick machines are cheap compared to that Miller new. I'd say put that money towards running the power vs getting the small inverter and you will be better off in the long run..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I have a small 110 volt arc welder, but even it calls for a dedicated 30 amp 110v circuit for best results. My 110v mig does pretty good with flux core wire, but does not do well on long runs of extension cord.
Reply:I see little engine drive welder / generators on craigslist fairly often for less than a grand.  Even bobcats will be listed for 1500 or less and probably could be talked down.  Seems a lot of crack is being smoked on craiglist with people asking more than new prices for used stuff.
Reply:1.  Run a 220V circuit if you can and get a 220V welder...more capacity.2.  If you are stuck with 120V like I am currently, go ESAB Miniarc 161LTS.  It's a 110-120/220V inverter.  Reasonably priced, very dependable being ESAB.  If you do go with any 120V welder, I strongly suggest having the welder circuit with 10ga wire from the breaker box and a 30A breaker.  That way you won't be tripping any breakers.  Sometimes these inverters will trip 20A breakers on 12ga. wiring when you max out the welder amperage.

Reply:Upgrading to 220 is worth it. You can get a real compressor, welder, band saw, plasma, etc. Really anything 110 is portable tiny stuff, don't get me wrong, my 110 Lincoln is great, but will never replace a 220 welder on a real job.
