The exhaust on the old JD4240 rusted so bad there was only about half the outside shell still there.  I found some drops of 9" thinwall stainless pipe and decided to do a rebuild. The outside shell is just a piece of the pipe that was flattened to an oval shape in the vise.  The top and bottom pipes were cut, rolled with a hammer and a piece of wood, then rewelded.  End caps were cut and beat flat.  The bottom pipe extends up to nearly the top of the shell, and the top pipe extends to nearly the bottom of the shell.  This should prevent any rain from being able to enter the engine.  A small piece of tubing at the bottom provides a drain and was bent after installation to make sure the water doesn't drain onto the engine.Zero dollars not including labor Attached ImagesDynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE

Reply:Mick, the angled top still runs the risk of getting rained in if the wind is blowing right.  Plus blowing the exhaust straight up keeps from me sniffing fumes in all wind conditions.Stump, the "flopper" top would have worked, but I didn't already have one the size that would work, and that's just something else I'd have to make.  I wanted the chamber to help quieten the sound.  I only had to add a hole at the bottom for the drain to fix the rain problem.  That was easier than fabing a flopper top.  I'm not lazy, I'm efficient!Last edited by AndyA; 07-16-2012 at 02:31 PM.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Really nice.  You took care of draining the "muffler" but what about the engine cylinder?  I still vote for a hinged cap.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year

Reply:with the rain fall rate we had in houston last week, id say that tubing at the bottom would have to be almost as big at the exhaust pipe! lol.  rain cap = $25. engine rebuild = $thousands.  (get a rain cap, its cheap insurance for a good ol tractor)
Reply:I've got it covered with the oil filter cutoff.  I considered it the other way around.  The water trap in the muffler is insurance for the time I forget to cover the exhaust I tested the muffler with the water hose before I installed it.  I've seen some hard rains, but there's no way it could over run the drain tube.  Even without the drain, it only has a 3" pipe for rain to fall into.  So a 6 inch rain is only going to fill the shell maybe 2 inches deep.  To fill the 10 inches would need 30 inches of rain.  We only average 48 inches of rain per year!Last edited by AndyA; 07-16-2012 at 07:35 PM.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:what if carbon build up blocks your drain tubing ?
Reply:Toss a rain flapper on there for some extra protection. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
