So a friend of mine picked up an aluminum truck box for a good price, its for a full size truck, designed to sit inside the bed with the top flush with the bedrails. Only problem is he drives an s10 so for a weekend project I cut the bottom corners out and moved them in 4" so it would fit on his truck. Didn't take a picture bfore I started, but the box was basically square with beveled bottom. This is the first side cut, moved over and tacked, ready to weld out: Started to weld (you can see where I dipped my tungsten a few times on top ): I did one side at a time to minimize warpage, the first side welded out: The other side: And the final product: I think it turned out pretty good, It would have been easier if I had taken a little more time to prep and clean the metal. Welded it with my Eastwood tig 200. Not sure what alloy it is although I know its not 6061 cuz it fusion welded without hot cracking. I think it was anodized too, not really sure though. http://www.philswelding.com
Reply:You are a good friend. Looks good.to me.Next take the grinders out of the picture. It just gives some around here something to talk about.
Reply:Thanks.Probly should have left that pic out then... but Im not asking anyone else to use their grinders without the guards, im comfortable with using them like that, other people obviously are not. To each their own. http://www.philswelding.com
Reply:Looks good, might have some guys with the small trucks looking for one like that from the factory without know this one was modified if they just see it in the parking lot.Tell him to look under that plastic bedliner, he won't like what he finds it is doing to the sheet metal under there. I removed mine in the 2nd or 3rd day after I bought my S-10 used. It rubs through the paint, then the primer and let's rust start. So much for protecting the bed.
Reply:I did one just like that for a Colorado a few years back. Don't worry 'bout the grinders, but do stand that battery up.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Is there some sort of optical illusion going on here? The box you modified has a beveled bottom and the one in the truck appears to be straight. Regardless, nice job.
Reply:Sorry, my bad, I now see the bevel is lower.
Reply:Nice job on the box mod!
Reply:I had to reread that. You took it from a full size in bed box to a midsized over the rail by cutting it out. Nice work for sure. I'd have just kept shopping CL for the right toolbox Lincoln AC225 and CartLincoln WeldPak HD and CartOne hand
