Hey, i wanted to share i recently finished my first solo project!! i.e. my first build without any help on the design, grinding and welding. All my previous work was mechanic related on my own vehicles and done some brazing here and there when was necessary for something. Long story short, recently my girlfriend was browsing for a small book shelf to put many books that are crawling everywere. So when we saw the big price and poor quality of most options she asked "hey since you are mechanically able with your bike cant you make something like this?" i said with all confidence "sure!" but in reality i was asking myself how the hell am i going to do it.so after giving it some thought i decided to make two rectangular shelves of 90cm x 20cm with 5/8 inches angle iron. The rest of the things came down the way during the project. All the work was done on my dads shop were im lucky to have access to many tools plus an oxyacetylene equipment and a stick welder that i never used before. So on to the project.Initial grinding and presentation. That table is used to put cylinder heads on it, so its far from flat and it was a bit shorter than the shape so it was a pain to get the parts in place to check the cuts. That was followed by some light grinding and bronze brazing with the oxy torch.Once brazed i found and bought this beatifull shaped sheet to make the floor of the shelves. Its smooth and its really easy to cut and work with. Here is already cut and fittedNow to the real test, i found some U shaped iron shapes in a local shop that decided to put on the edges of the stand, so i decided i was going to give it a go to the stick welder to join them and fit them on the stand. Being a shop of old school mechanics that also have a lot of work, my first stick welding lesson was like this:- See, you put the electrode here, ground here, turn the machine on, lower your mask and do it like this, did you get it?- "Sure!" And here goes my first ever stick welds:Finally i did this parts for securing the shelve to the wall of 3mm iron with a huge bench grinding stone, they didnt turn up that bad and i think the welds got better by this pointFinished product, still waiting for paint Im pretty happy with the result and now i just want to keep building things and improve my welds, never thought it would be so much fun to make your own welds!! Thanks for reading and i welcome any comments, critics, etc.
Reply:Nice project.Get the slag off the beads before pics.  Lets us see the actual weld for comment.
Reply:practice your welds Other than that looks good
Reply:Just call the welds "rustic", that's what I would do. Thenrun out and buy mig or one of those small inverter "lift" tig/stick units. That would work way better on little jobs like that. If it's small,I tig, bigger, mig, biggest, stick. Nice looking tin and ornamentation. Get a tig, you'll do some real nice stuff.
Reply:Looks great for your first time ever. Get some 1/4 inch flat scrap, run a weld bead about 5-6 inches long. Remove the slag, and run another bead overlaying half of the previous weld. And continue this over and over. In a few days you will have some nice looking welds. Once your comfortable with that, start over this time run your first bead, and set the electrode aside, grab a new one and run the bead, set the electrode aside, grab another and run a bead. You want the left over electrodes to be the same size it will tell you if your beads are consistent.Keep at it and you will lay some really nice welds. Your first ever attempt looks better than mine. After alot of practice they will get much better.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.
