I've had the cast iron base to a Singer treadle sewing machine sitting in my yard for years now, after a neighbor threw it out.  The cabinet and machine were beyond repair when I got it, but I've always wanted to do something with the cast iron base. When I found a set of pool table slates on craigslist being given away (I just had to remove them from a basement, but that's a whole nother story), I had the makings of a kitchen table (a whole lot of wet diamond grinding later).I just wanted to have a nice looking base, that didn't interfere with your feet.I took apart the sewing machine base, to use each side (I still haven't decided what to do with the treadle and flywheel, etc).  Out came the plasma cutter.  I removed the oval insert with the Singer name from one side, and cut a slot halfway up on that side, then cut a slot halfway down the other.  Slipped them together, bronze brazed them into one piece with O/A, and voila, new kitchen table. Now I've just got to do the paint. Reply:really cool!kinda dangerous?  Do you have kids?   Do you wear steel toes with metatarsals to eat?   I'm all for personal responsibilty but it's just a though that it will crush anyone near it if it gets tipped.
Reply:I do, and I do, but my steel toe boots don't have metatarsal guards. But it is a lot harder to tip than it looks.  The slate is just about 85lbs, at 1" thick and 33" across. The feet are just about 18" apart (ok, this number is from memory, but I'll check this later).  That makes for just a 7 1/2" overhang at the four maximal points, and a 5.5" overhang at the corners where the feet are.The slate is NOT just resting on top of the iron.  Yeah, that would be scary. The iron sides already had ears with holes facing up, which were originally used to bolt to the sewing machine cabinet.  I placed a square (not visible in the picture) of 3/4" plywood on top of the iron, and screwed it to that with some #12 wood screws.  I then got it centered on the slate, marked the position with soapstone on the bottom of the slate, had my wife lift the slate one side at a time, and I put a bunch of epoxy between the slate and the wood.  That way, I can tip it, take out the four screws, and paint the iron by itself some other time (once I've picked the color). So, the slate is firmly secured to the base.  Yeah, I already thought about this a bunch.  It did after all have to meet the wife's approval too, to be allowed in the kitchen (and tipping over was her first concern).Anyway, because of the massive weight of the table, you can push down really hard on one side, and there is plenty of weight to counterbalance you.  You have to lift one side about a foot, before it goes over its balance point, and want's to head down to the floor the wrong way.Besides, this is way lighter than many glass table's I've dealt with.Oh, and thanks.  I knew the first comment would be something safety related.  That one gave me a good laugh.BTW, did you notice how I used my new 110V mig welder to attach the cast iron to a trailer hitch, so I can have breakfast rolling down the highway behind my Jeep.    I just haven't figured out the chairs for that yet.  Maybe I'll have to use roller skates and just stand at the table, but that seems uncivilized.Last edited by rlitman; 07-23-2012 at 12:24 PM.
Reply:I had to laugh at the last part. This forum does seem to have certain buttons that are easy to push.I like the re-purposing of the sewing machine base. That table looks great.
Reply:How heavy is the whole thing?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
