I have just recently tried tig welding. When welding do I just move the torch in a straight line with no movement or do i make circles or any other movements?
Reply:Generally you stay in one spot until you melt a puddle or creator and then add filler while moving steadily along.  Not all joint configurations need filler. Quite likely would make multiple short beads and then go around and fill in the spaces between them.  At times one might back up with the torch a bit while adding filler but would probably get scolded for doing that.
Reply:Learning I recommend people keep things simple and just move the torch straight. There's enough other things going on to worry about. With a fillet joint, I do use a slight side to side motion, but you can do it without that motion as well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:After you start the weld, you mostly just go straight along with the torch. Dipping the filler is what makes the beads. There are some more advanced type welds that might need pausing and throttling, but don't worry about that yet. Just keep practicing, with time you'll start to get a feel for what heat is required and where to get the results you're after, it's surprisingly intuitive. Practice. Practice. Reply:also try and keep a constant steady speed/ movement of the torch once you establish the puddle and don't worry about the stack-o-dimes look;  Which comes from each time you add filler rod not from repeatedly pausing the torch movement.  (at least from a basics standpoint).   are you using a machine with a pedal?Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:i am using foot pedal.
Reply:I am trying to learn how to tig 1 1/8 tubing with .120 wall.  Any advice for welding around tubing? I am having a tough time keeping torch angled correctly all the way around the tube. I am doing it in 1/4's
Reply:first 9>12second 3>12third 9>6fourth 3>6it will warp a tiny bit towards 12.small OD tubing is kind of difficult at first( few years ) ) Attached Images--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:Is it hard to weld the 3-6 and 9-6  because going down?  How do you stop the puddle from dripping?
Reply:just twist the pipe/tube or you're training for a position test? and the puddle will not drip at the right amperage/weld speed.--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:There's a risk of creating undercut, if you allow the arc go beyond the puddle if you are making circles or cursive e's or the like. There are lots of ways to do it right, as many will attest. I would start with the notion, that the arc creates the puddle, once the puddle is present, dip, then move forward a little, when the puddle is as wide as the last place you paused, dip and move. Of course, you can just slowly move the torch without pausing and regularly dip your rod too. Just make sure your arc melts the parent metal, to create the puddle, and the puddle melts the rod. It's really easy when you're just beginning to allow the arc to melt the rod, which is basically a no-no.Proud to support Reliable Sheet Metal Works, in Fullerton, CA.Full service sheet metal fabrication serving Orange County since 1926.http://www.reliablesheetmetal.com
Reply:Have you mastered the basic positions yet? How many hours of arc time do you have?
Reply:I have roughly 40hrs, I can do pretty well on most positions. I want to build a roll cage for a dune buggy so I am trying to become skilled at welding tubing in various positions.

Reply:To start I would take a piece of angle iron laid flat and set the cup of your tig torch in the groove. Work the cup side to side in the groove and it should walk itself along without you putting much pressure on it. Practice getting the movement down without lighting the torch. Once you have it down light the torch and lay the tip of the filler wire directly in the groove. You may have to adjust your tungsten so it isn't hitting the angle iron or your filler wire. Walk the torch along and it will melt the wire right in the groove. This way you don't have to dip the rod in and out of the puddle. If the wire tries to ball up raise the back end of the wire up higher so the melted wire can flow straight down into the puddle.  If it isn't melting, crank up the heat. Once your heat is set right it will flow like butter. Once you get it down try it on pipe. Walk it side to side and put a little arch in every step so you walk the cup around the pipe.

Reply:It's helpful if you post up your machine settings, tungsten/ filler size, tungsten type, gas flow and type of machine when posting up replies.  great example by the way.  you can put your machine info in your signature in the User CP sectionTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
