Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone who has used both of these hoods can offer me some advice.I've been using a Huntsman 951P for a while, but I haven't been completely satisfied with it. From the weight with a glass lens, to the retaining clip, and desiring a clear lens for grinding and getting myself positioned into tight corners, I decided I wanted to try something a little different. For the record, I have a really nice auto dark hood, but I prefer gold plated glass lenses above all else.I originally wanted to get the 490P, which is the vulcanized fiber model with the quick sliding lens, but Amazon had a deal on the 430P (vulcanized fiber flip front), four of them for the price of one of the quick slide hoods. I figured I'd keep one for back up and probably sell the other two to coworkers or give them away as gifts. They arrived the other day, and wow is the build quality great! Definitely built to last and probably second to no other hood I have tried. However, the flip mechanism is built so sturdily that it really is quite heavy. I'm not sure that it weighs any less than the 951 with glass.Does anyone have any experience with both the 430P and the 490P? Which do you prefer? Which is lighter? Is the quick-slide worth $60 more than the flip-front? Also, I know that these fiber hoods aren't rated for overhead, but neither are most modern auto darkening hoods. How do they fare under those conditions?Thank you in advance!
Reply:It's been 36+ years since I used either one, but I seem to remember the Huntsman 490P being a little lighter than the Huntsman 430P. I didn't know they were not rated for overhead! Man I'm sure glad I didn't know that back then! Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400 |
