Ever get stuck in a rut, and cant think of anything to make?  I have it bad right now, and im going f$&kin stir crazy!
Reply:Great time to clean up the shop. Just dont let the wife know you are without something to do, she can fix that real quick if given the chance.Making as much progress as a one legged duck in the middle of a pond, just going in circles.
Reply:You made the basket maker. I can think of a few dozen forge projects that would make use of them... Candle holders, fire place tools, assorted kicknacks...I can think of at least a dozen "tool" projects I'd like to make.Maybe start on a few early Christmas / Birthday gifts if nothing else..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:You obviously don't do this for a living. There is alwaya some thing else to do....but it's for some one else.
Reply:Like bhardy said. Start cleaning/organizing the shop, chances are you will find something you need to make.If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish
Reply:That sounds like an idea DSW.  I just get the welders version of writers block some times, and it drives me nuts.  Wife already knows I have no projects on the table so she wants to drag me to pier one for ideas for projects for her! Ahhhhhhhhh!   Im finding myself lately really leaning towards the wrought iron forged look.  As for the shop, its spotless, and thats the problem, it needs to start looking like im making something!  Im thinking about building a coal forge out of a break drum I seen online.  If I do, ill post pictures.

Reply:Coal forge or gas forge is on my list for this week or next. I've got most of the parts, I just need to find the time to toss one together to do a few small forge projects for a friend. I thought about making a brake drum forge, but it looks like a table is a better way to go, so that's the way I'm headed right now unless I can get the burner for the gas forge to work tomorrow.Digging thru the "scrap" at the shop it look like I might have enough material to start a power hammer as well, so that will go on the list for later. I need to find some cheap pillow block bearings and a few other parts. Tongs, fullers, hardie tools... I just need to get a bigger anvil. Didn't have the cash to get the 300 lb Fisher at the auction the other day. I've got someone who has a bigger  anvil than mine they'll sell me, if they can ever did it out....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I was wondering if one of these big torches from HF would work as a heating sourse for the forge....maybe just weld it to the tank...LOL, I don't know... what you all think Attached ImagesLast edited by aquaholica; 07-24-2012 at 12:27 PM.Originally Posted by aquaholicaI was wondering if one of these big torches from HF would work as a heating sourse for the forge....maybe just weld it to the tank...LOL, I don't know... what you all think

Reply:The one I'm thinking about is a small unit. Not much to it really. A motor and eccentric to drive it, a flat spring at the top of the column, hammer shaft and "anvil". I'm thinking about a set of plans similar to one of these...http://www.appaltree.net/rusty/RUSTY.htmhttp://www.instructables.com/id/Power-hammer/?ALLSTEPSI've got a nice 8'-10' chunk of 8" H beam for the column / base/ hammer guide, motor, shaft stock, might have a piece big enough for the hammer ( have a chunk of 2x4" solid I think 5' long). I've got an old spring off the F350 to use up top, but I believe I need to get it straightened, so it might just be cheaper to get the spring shop to make me a flat spring and go new. I've got enough material to do a built up anvil, but really want a decent chunk of solid stock (saw some nice drops at the metal supplier today, but he wants more than I want to spend right now). I'm hoping to find a nice piece of scrap at a yard for that. Other than the UHMW plastic for the guides ( might even have enough of that if I do a bit of digging), the pulleys, ecentric and bearing blocks. Might need some misc materials for the treadle, connecting rods etc. Won't really know until I get a set of plans and start pulling materials..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I just built a 4 burner gas forge with a old 40# propane tank, there's nothing really redneck about it though. Its a good project. http://www.philswelding.com

Reply:I built a crude forge out of fire brick to melt some brass using one of those weed burners.  The propane alone did not get hot enough but when I took my cutting torch and added oxygen to the air intake things got hot fast. For my crucible I used a 6" weld on steel pipe cap.  I wanted to pour a brass disc 1" thick and 6" dia.  I made a mold in the dirt to pour into.  A long story short moisture in dirt and hot brass do not mix and things went really bad.  Sorry for the hijackDan
