Hi all , haven't been on here in awhile i had some worthless POS  break into my house this week while i was at work and stole some tools and ran sacked my house and got some of my personal information, (didn't get my welder though )not on here to cry just need a little help  . what i would like to see is if any of you guys have made some sort of device to secure a regular walk in door as that is what they kicked in to get in my house through my garage something like laying a board or sq. tubing across to keep it from being kicked in again. show me what some of you sharp fellas can come up with.  thanks chris
Reply:If they are willing to literally kick in a door, you ain't gonna stop 'em.My name's not Jim....
Reply:CT so sorry about the loss, you would like to catch the scrotums in the process and make it the last place they ever robed.  My brother is a cop and I ask the question of him all the time, he claims a dog, even the little noise makers, can sometimes deter scum bags low life POSs.  My two German Shepards would probably rip their faces off, but I'm not sure there's anything that's foolproof.
Reply:Ive seen some worksite shanty doors where they put a tab at the bottom of the door and have a shackle into the concrete on the outside where the tab locks to when the door is closed. These doors were a bit more beefy than your average residential door to begin with though. Some variation of that has been done many times by me. To me its the old bear attack theory: You dont have to run faster than the bear, you just have to run faster than the guy next to you, so if your house is more secure than your neighbors. They might pass you up for easier pray.Local 597
Reply:This might be a good investment for you. I have installed a few of them for some businesses. All you can do is make it inconvenient & bring enough unwanted attention to the thief that they will leave before stealing anything. http://intellahome.com/goodwiredcomp...77890faffbf51aMastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power.
Reply:The weak point on most residential solid core wood or steel doors is the frame. They'll tear the hinges/ deadbolt out of the light weight 1x frame or in some cases even the 2x4 studs. Don't even bother with traditional wood doors. There's almost no way to protect those, they just kick out the panels. There are a number of ways to "lock" a non egress door to a garage or shop. Bars that cross the door with bracket lagged into studs. A heavy bolt that is inset in the concrete floor just inside the door. The old braced wedge under the door knob. Note that some of these are not the greatest choices for doors that might need to be used for egress in case of fire.A good commercial steel frame door will help, but again, it's only as strong as the attachment to the studs unless you are going into block. Around here they some times just cut thru the siding and don't even bother with the doors. Many of the newer development homes you can get in thru the siding, cardboard sheathing and drywall with a utility knife....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:sign on an old cabin door,"Set guns are illegal,so is breaking & entering.I've made my choice; you make yours"I know its not politically correct to set devices that might do harm to the poor person who's stealing from your home, but its sure a temptation.Kevin MorinKenai, AK
Reply:I am thinking very seriously about having a security system installed i have talked to a few people that have them and they seem to be well worth the money . but i 'll be damned if myself being a somewhat of a welder/fabricator  and not build some device to atempt to  keep this from happening again ! everyone i have talked to says make it as hard on em as possible and they will move on !!!! keep the ideas coming guys thanks  chris
Reply:There used to be a tear gas dispenser alarm available years ago. Either tear gas or (large) ORANGE smoke (so as not to be confused with a fire) could DENY your premises to intruders.Spoon-type military smoke grenades are now controlled due to a chemical in their fuses (as if that would stop "terrorists"!) but if you can rig an electric initiator "e match" into a fused smoke grenade you can buy those all day. There are plenty of smoke grenade vendors online.http://www.americanpyrosupply.com/SM...GRENADE_1.htmlhttp://www.americanpyrosupply.com/Pr...EM_EMATCH.htmlI've not gotten to making an "alarm" initiator yet due to laziness. If you do, post how you did it.Last edited by farmall; 07-20-2012 at 08:58 PM.

Reply:Locks are designed to keep out honest folks. If a bad guy wants in bad enough he will figure out how. You might want to keep in mind that the tighter you secure it the harder and longer it can take for the people you want in to get to you in an emergency. We have had houses that took us a long time and a lot of work to get into with someone laid out in the floor, unresponsive. When we do have to break in with extrication equipment we do a lot of damage that can be very expensive to repair. Just another point of view.Making as much progress as a one legged duck in the middle of a pond, just going in circles.

Reply:You can indeed get a dog.  24/7 alarmYou can install a steel door, the only thing you have to keep in mind is that the doors should have lock pins on the sides, so even IF they bother to damage the steel hinges it's nearly impossible to lift out the door.I know Hörmann has these doors in europe, don't know if they sell these types in the USA, probably they do.Of course you can make your own door like this, or modify a commercial one of any brand. And if you are making these adjustments, change the lock to an "anti-break-in" lock. Reply:Sorry you got robbed. At least you AND your welder are ok Steel door and frame with a heavy wood frame to mount to. Good bit of cheap extra is to glue and screw the 2x stock together for the wood frame. Then it's more like a one big solid unit. The clients I've done "bars" for ( I made them all like vines with leaves so they don't feel like they're in jail), I've told them 90% of the defense is visual. Why try to get through bars when your neighbour doesn't have any to slow them down.  Get creative and make door gates that lag into the solid door frame. If they look good, they are easier to live with. If you just want something for when you are on vacation, something that drops into bolted on brackets is an option. Then you can just do bars. Through holes in the mounting points and four padlocks to secure them. Take you 20mins to install and it's cheap and almost no maintenance. Yes, people are going to moan that they could take a big pry bar to it, or rip them out with a truck and chain or unscrew the lag bolts. 99% of morons won't  and the 1% that will, are getting in your house unless you have armed guards at every door. Like I said, it's mostly visual. My in-laws in Germany have powered, roll down steel shutters. One click and the house is sealed. And they are built in so you can see them when retracted. God damn that paint ball gun thing is cool! Problem is it would shoot the postman or kids playing. Just thought while watching that would be pressurized pepper spray units that blast a big cloud as soon as someone moves through and entry point. Arm and disarm via key pad. The unit could be placed as needed and charged with a compressor to a pressure bottle and battery powered so it's totally self contained. Then at least the person has definitely broken in to the house. ......or a trap door that drops them into a chipper and then shoots the pulp into a kiln for complete disposal. And to keep it environmentally friendly, you could up-cycle the dust for kitty litter. Satisfying, no? Reply:I was reminded of this thread last night about 1:30 AM when somebody slow rolled by my place about 4 times.  By slow, I'm talking idling along and they turned around a block away to come back more than once. They were definately looking for something.  I called in a description to the sheriff's office since nobody in town owns that make/model/style truck.   30 minutes later the deputy went through town. Not fast enough, but not too bad either.  The sheriff's office is 15 minutes away and he was on patrol anyway.   I wasn't able to get a plate # cuz their light was out.My name's not Jim....

Reply:After my buddies house got broken into we put up cameras and an alarm system. The alarm system uses a SIM card and has back up batteries so even if they cut the phone / power lines it wouldn't do any good. We put up no trespassing signs, as well as higher fences. He has rolls of concertina wire that never got put up. We also make sure that whenever we are working in his yard to open carry. That way its made very clear to anyone who might pass by.That being said, we were sad we couldn't use

One thing I remember, if they break in your place you got 75% of chance they gone do it again and find another way to get in... They already check around last time to find another way since they know next time that door will be secure...Breaking a basement window, pushing an A/C in the house are the most usual choices, try to find the weak link in your house, install external and internal infrared motion detection camera. You can find good one and bad one on EBay, go to your local security reseller and ask question, be ready to invest $500 for a good day/night 4 camera setup with the internet email or call option. Live viewing and control.Good chance they never come back if they see an external camera over that door and a security key pad even if it's not wire to anything!I like all pepper spray idea!:Wish it was legal here in my part of the wood DLast edited by OldSkull; 07-24-2012 at 01:32 PM.Miller MM211Esab Mini Arc 161LTSEsab Handy Plasma 380Duck tapeTy- rapKool-aidI turned on my motion sensing lights and was trying to think of a low cost "alarm" for the garage.  I think an easy one would be some tubing standing on end near the door and windows.  A 4" diameter thin wall tube would make a hell of a racket when it tipped over and present no danger to an intruder (man trap).  I figure that if I don't hear the tube drop, the dogs surely will.My name's not Jim....

Reply:Collect or buy an old garage door lock and arms/brackets.If your  door hinges inside to left  cut and  install arms  like a  k  near top and bottom  to allow arms to engage tabs along door perimeter 4" down and 4 "up from the >right> (regular door lock side) corners. With regular lock and garage door arms top and bottom you have to cut your way in through the door. For door hinging inside right just reverse. You could also go arms top of door and bottom of door but drilling concrete is no small feat.I haven't played with a garage door lock that was keyed entry from outside, I only surface mounted the lock and  arms and used the inside handle to the garage door lock.It sure makes the door bank vault secure. good luck and pay it forward if you use this idea. namaste!

Reply:I have used the good old rat trap to catch catfish.set side  centerline striking side.Main line, (hook on other end) through eyelet over bail and back to bail center bar attached at base, Double bolen tied on main line to form loop below trap 4--5". tie secondary line from bolen  (under centerline) bail bar to set bracket underneath, tied off so as to pull the tab down. rubber band from bolen to eyelet to keep tension off  the set tab untill the catfish stretches out the rubber band and sets the trap, setting the hook. 2 holes drilled in base 2" back from striking edge  with string run through  to hang from backside  vertically over water by limb or cane pole.

Can't wait for the dirt bag to get out of jail so I can beat $900.00 worth of chainsaw out of him. State police said one of the best thing is to put a security system sign in the front yard weather you have one or not. Good luck just keep asking questions those mother f===kers always talk to someone. Remember dig a hole deeper than the dogs can smell at least thats what the trooper told me.

Reply:This is what I installed in my own shop, together with a hardwired alarm system. I installed it, so there was no labor expense.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZMODO-8-CH-H...item53ecbb5542Keep in mind you also have to purchase a 500 gig sata type hard drive for the dvr. I also recommend upgrading the cameras to these type. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-GVI-Outd...item1e6d408f5bEven if you use them inside you can buy the enclosure  too for about the same price as the camera alone. Also upgrade to the loudest siren you can get for the alarm system. That makes thiefs  scatter like a covey of quail. I probably have about $675.00 in my system. I look at it as insurance & an investment in security, & well worth it.Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power.

Reply:Maybe an alarm system is warranted. Even if it isn't monitored just have some loud sirens alerting neighbors.
