It takes me a lot of piddling, and now I'm going to have the place to do it. I've waited over 30 years to have a decent workshop. Now it is under way. We finally found and bought another house after selling ours last year. One of the main points was to have room for a good size workshop. This one is 30' x 40'. I'll post pictures as we come up out of the ground. At the same time, we are gutting and remodeling the house. One side of the house is 5 years old and the other side is 55 years old. The old side is going to have all new kitchen, 2 new bathrooms, new plumbing and wiring. What a project! A few surprises, but still managable.   Attached ImagesBurt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:Good for you! What size is it?Looks big enough for me to make a mess in. LolG
Reply:30' x 40' it says it in the OP. I want to get a personal shop that size bad make sure you plan out everything to the "T" fume extraction where electrical is going to be run and if you run a lot of pneumatic then where your running the plumming for it. I do have a cad drawing with a wirring diagram and and everything for a 25'x20' shop (It was a project for my electrical class) if I can find the flash drive and you would like to see it let me know.
Reply:Dhhu!Sorry, must have bee just looking at the picsG
Reply:Well, with the tornadoes all around, all we have gotten done is stub in the plumbing, conduit for security system and network, and conduit for the meter base on the far left side. The concrete guys will pour the floor either tomorrow or Monday. (BTW, the tornadoes killed more than 30 people within 15-20 miles of us, please pray for these familes and all the ones that lost their homes and businesses.)I am adding a picture of the house, in case you are interested. Reply:That's a nice looking building.  I am glad that you and yours weren't badly damaged by the storm, but I'm sorry those around you were.
Reply:great looking setup!  i am very envious lol!
Reply:Nice shop. Keep the pictures coming. We are on our way to being farmers! Our site is always under construction so check back often for updates.  http://www.philosophyfarmstyle.com/
Reply:I'm envious too. My garage is officially (according to the tax man) a two car garage. But if I put the truck in you can't work on all four wheels at once (for example). Still, it is infinitely better than no garage at all

Reply:Last week we got the metal roofing on and all the plumbing and wiring roughed in. This week we will get the insulation and sheet rock in the climate controlled storage room and bathroom. Reply:Im jealous, I want a bathroom and shower in my shop too.  Nothing sucks as bad as having to go and walking all the way to the house and the urge is gone.  You walk back and then the urge comes back... Looks great and the size will take a good bit to fill, at least 6 months or so.  Any plans for the equipment layout, elec and air systems yet?  I tried to integrate all of that as I built mine and made sure I left plenty of room for expansion.  That way when I hit the lottery and expand my shop again I wont have to run new electric service or get additional compressor capacity.  The noise I got now is enough, and the comp is outside in an enclosed shed attatched to the main building.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?

Reply:I like it!!!You are showing all your love and craftsmanship in the last picture. You have the Tyvek (or whatever brand you are using) right side up!!!!   I bugs me to see it upside down. Taking care to get the details right ends up in a better job.Enjoy
Reply:Thanks for all the comments. This has been a long time coming. The guys are doing a great job with the details. Good crew. Obviously, I couldn't do a building this size by myself, but I get to do all the planning, layout, and direction. We are running a 200amp service to the building. I have 4 welding outlets - 1 outside the rollup door and 3 inside in the corner to the left. My welding equipment will be near the door and my wood equipment will be in the back. I liked the earlier idea of separating those, but don't think I will be able to without losing a lot of flexibility. I have a 220v box for a larger air compressor later.I'm putting in overhead fans and 2 banks of lights on separate switches. There is an outside light with an outside switch near the walk-in door and another 2 lights just inside the door on a switch. There is an 8'x20' climate controlled area so we don't have to pay for a miniwarehouse anymore. It will be insulated and sealed with a separate walk-in door. The bathroom has a toilet and sink and it will be finished. There is a area for a table, refrig, coffee pot, and big sink. Sometimes you gotta take a break or have a cold one with your buddy. My wife asked where the cot is going to be since she thinks I will never come in the house. She might be right. She is the one who wanted the bathroom so I don't track black grit into the house.Eventually I will close up the walls in the shop area but I'm leaving it open until I make sure I don't need more outlets, etc. I'm going to run a treated 1"x4" all along the base of the walls, then 1/2" plywood running horizontal, topped with sheetrock. Any other ideas or suggestions are welcome.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:In my workshop I used FRP plastic panels in the restroom.  I thought that if they are good enough for comercial kitchens and restraunt bath rooms, they are good enough for my workshop.  Lowes sold them; glued them over the drywall.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:That is a really nice building. I hope you  keep the pics coming after you move your tools in. I always like seeing how people organize their shop. I like stealing creative ways to pack the tools away, since I cannot come up with any on my own.
Reply:Thanks for the nice comments. I will continue posting pictures as I go along.MrBeast - the door is 10' wide by 8' high. The walls are 10', so that is the tallest rollup door that would fit. I considered 12' walls, but seemed too much for my use.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:I'm sorry I have not posted anything new about my shop in a while, but we have been very busy finishing, moving, unpacking, etc. I have basically just thrown my tools and equipment in the shop building for now, but I hope to have it all arranged in another week or so. I just wanted to post a couple of new pictures. Attached ImagesBurt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:Nice shop so far, looks good. I built my shop two years ago and it also was along time coming. As far as the walls if I were you I would consider either 1/4 peg board or slat board for hanging stuff.
Reply:Good for you. I wish I had a place like that. ...One day...
Reply:Great looking shop - always fun to see these build pictures. Thanks for sharing."Never trust anything you read on the Internet" - Abraham Lincoln
Reply:Wow!  That was a year ago?
Reply:Yes, it was a year ago. I am still finishing the inside walls. I am using 1x4 Pressure Treated for a base board with 1/2" AC plywood running along the top of that. Then sheet rock from there up. So far I really like this because if I ever got water in it or wanted to wash it out, the 1x4 should keep the plywood dry. And because I screwed the plywood, if I need to get behind it to run a new circuit, I can just unscrew, then put it back. So far I have not finished the sheet rock, but once I have all of it up, I will and paint it. It is all well insulated, too. I have 9 different 220v circuits, 5 are 50 amp. I am in the process of adding a 18K BTU air conditioner.I'll take some more recent pictures and post them since this thread has been resurrected.Thank you for your comments!Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
