I just started working for a new construction company. Got my own work truck with a red-d-arc in the back of it. And other miscellaneous stuff in the back of it. Cleaned out all of the junk in the back of the bed. Now i have either a 4'x4' area or 72"x30" area where i can build my own setup for my welding leads. I would prefer the 72"x30" since i dont have to jump on the truck bed to pull my leads out. Buying aluma reels are definitely out of the question. Anybody have any suggestions or built reels similar to alumareels so i dont have to connect and disconnect everytime im done welding? I know pictures of the back of the truck would help, but i wasnt thinking ahead.  Ill post pictures tomorrow.Ranger 305gMillermatic 140 AutosetDewalt Chopsaw2 grindersMy Fists

Reply:Here is apicture of mine. It is made of trailer spindle and hub. The current goes through the bearings. You need to insulate the reel from the truck. They are very easy to build and have worked perfectly for nearly 30 years now. Attached Images
Reply:Yeah I've built reels but most of mine aren't to truck friendly IMHO. Though some ideas might be gotten from them. Let's see IIRC someone posted some that are the right type on one of my reel threads now where are they. Ah here it is. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43051  Some of the ideas from the three different types shown might get you started. I plan on something similar to heimbucks on my new truck. But mine will be shorter and fatter. Kinda in between the ones shown since I'm planning on putting them on the door of my toolbox.  Here's a couple of sketchup views of my current plan for my new truck. I'm going to remove the front drivers corner box currently on the service bed I have and build a new one 5' tall to hold most of my welding stuff in one place. Reply:mount em one over top of the other.
Reply:Try to mount them in a box. If you can keep them out of the weather, your leads will last 10 times as long.
Reply:I'll second the box thing.  Keep the thieves away!
Reply:Sorry everybody. Got sidetracked at work. I like ur setup mbwelder, but did you build them and how?Ranger 305gMillermatic 140 AutosetDewalt Chopsaw2 grindersMy Fists
Reply:Here's a pic of mine.  They've worked fine since 1996, I think i'm gonna build a new bed on my '99 dodge, and make it a welding truck too, and try to enclose them some way.  they've weathered ok, but copper is such a valuable commodity anymore...
Reply:this is a more straight on view of them.
Reply:I still want to skirt the bed on this one, and build some boxes in both in front of and behind the rear wheels.  You can never have enough lockable storage space on a welding truck.  And these under bed boxes on this truck leak like you wouldn't believe.  My '99 is a quad cab dually, so it won't have an 11' bed like this one, but i've been around pipeline rigs all my life, so I have a lot of ideas that I plan to utilize on it.  I'm going to build it from the frame up, exactly like I want it, instead of starting with a flatbed, and making it work.
