Hi, i googled and found this site. Read a few things about exhaust welding and see its pretty damn difficult. I just bought this Lincoln AC225s from home depot got it all wired up in my garage. Was actually really easy to wire up the receptacle. Code:http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lincoln-Electric-AC225S-Arc-Welder-K1170/100041326 I have 6011 rods and gave it a shot on 75 but it just keeps trying to stick, pretty hard to see in my helmet. I don't plan on using this on my explorer exhaust, mainly because its old and rusted. I plan on using it for my 2013 Cruze.Anybody have any tips? I'm completely new to welding.
Reply:We need to know what size electrodes you are using.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Welcome to the site. Lets start with why do you want to make exhaust for a new grocery getter?2nd, why choose a stick welder to do it? 3rd, what is wrong with the exhaust that is on it?You've got a decent machine to play with and learn, but not for exhaust welding.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I've never done a lot of exhaust work. Few years ago I gutted 3-cats on my great niece's car. I'm pretty good with a stick welder. Just don't think I'm good enough to weld exhaust pipe with stick. I used Mig on her exhaust system.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Stick welders really aren't the best choice for thin walled exhaust tubing.  You're also using 6011, which is a deep penetrating rod.  Try some 6013 in the smallest diameter you can get.  6013 is an AC compatible rod that's low penetration and recommended for sheet metal.  The smallest I've seen for sale at HD is 3/32 diameter.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:You can do it on the bench with a stick. Then assemble with clamps.Under the car is a different show. Oxy-acet can't be surpassed under a car.You can heat, twist, bend, weld, dent and fit it up like a Globetrotter to a Kardashian . No other tool can do it.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:get 6013 or 7014  1/16 rods. turn your machine down to 40ish amps. you wont be able to run a continuous bead on exhaust or youll blow threw. you need to do a series of spots welds then chip the slag and go back over any holes. it wont look too pretty but if you do it right it will hold and wont leak. if your butting to pieces together its going to be alot harder then slip fitting two pieces.  it can be done but i wouldnt recommend it for new exhaust on a new vehicle. now if you fixing a beater to pass inspection then sure.       always good to practice on scrap first
Reply:I agree stick isn't fun on exhaust. If you want to do exhaust kind of welding get a MIG.
