Ive got some 4"x4"x1/4" steel tubing that I plan on building a trailer from to haul my bbq smoker.its a little over kill but friend hooked me up with it for free. This will ne the first time ive built a trailer so I will probably have a friend of mine with more experience help me but what im wanting to know is how to join the tubing at the corners? Do I join them at 45 deg angle or just butt one up the other? I assumed they would need to be at 45 but after some research of builds I have seen  some done both ways. Trailer frame will be about 4 1/2ft x 7 1/2ft . Smoker is probably going to weigh around 1200 pounds when done. Thanks
Reply:Here we go...  At least you've got real steel and not bed frames or water pipe. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:There are times when having open end tube is nice. An example is running the wiring for the lights or needing that little "secret compartment" to store longer items like fishing rods, etc.On the other hand if you "seal weld" everything you won't have to worry about moisture (rust) on the inside of the tube.Maybe a combination of both will be best. Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:I think on a trailer that size. It wont make much difference. I find it easier to square a butt joint than a 45 corner, then cap the ends.Mark
Reply:If you 45 the ends and seal weld them.  You would have about a 45 gallon tank in the frame.  I can't imagine what you could use it for but just sayin.  Mac
Reply:I want to get get a good seat and some popcorn for this one, there are going to be many that jump all over this one.
Reply:I used to work at a trailer factory and we 45'd everything , no matter the size of material or or the trailer. I agree that it will not matter if you butt weld or 45 the corners but , i definitely think it looks better. So , i say if once the cooking ''vessel'' is mounted on the trailer, if the corners show , id 45 them , .

Reply:"But I'm bidin' my time, cause that's the kind of guy I'm..."Gershwin. I think it will be a heavy frame. Be that as it may, I am on the fence when it comes to seal welding tubes to stop rust. I have no real conclusions about trapping in condensation versus keeping out moisture. Could go either way myself.City of L.A. Reply:Put the popcorn down guys, red flags drop when friends with more exp. get into the picture. IMHO though, I think the 45's make for a cleaner trailer.
