On the hunt for a 60 gallon compressor to drive a {future} Hypertherm PowerMax 30 Plasma Cutter and air tools (e.g. angle/die grinders, impact, sanders).  Familiar and have used pancake-style and larger (20/30) compressors for heavy/light construction; however, currently only own a PC small compressor to drive small tools.Targeting the used market and Identified a CH 60-gallon, 6HP, 10SCFM @ 90psi (135psi max) w/ inline filter and regulator.  Asking price for the unit is $550.In communications with the seller.  Seller mentioned the unit was obtained from an automotive shop.  He only used the compressor to fill tires and other small work. No problems/issues disclosed. Requested the model number and year manufactured.Scheduled visit to check out the compressor is set for early next week.  In the interim, would greatly appreciate input with the following:1.  CH units solid?  Reviews on the newer 3-4HP CH 60-gallon units are positive.2.  Items to check at the site visit?  Overall condition, motor/belt states, corrosion, sound levels, required maintenance schedules, etc?  An operational test will be perform.Mahalo in advance for your feedback.
Reply:Go to Home Depot and look at there 60gal. comp. there Husky is $459.00 with a two year warranty. Husky is built by CH. This comp. will do what you need.
Reply:@ ThatsHot - Thanks.  Not sure how I missed that one.  Checked Lowes and HD online last week.  Ha!  Yes, Husky is built by CH.  BrandNew w/ warranty.  No issues.  Thanks for the re-alignment.
Reply:If you go used open the tank drain. If any rusty water comes out, walk away from it. Let me just say I had a bad experience w/ a rusty tank.                                             MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:@ Mike, 7A749, and Boots:  Check.  Thanks.  Got it.  Rusty H2O is tank is key item to always investigate.  Roll'n with a New Husky 60 gallon unit.  Will also look into adding an increased capacity ball valve.

Reply:Compressors are like shop power.  You 'think' you have enough until you realize you don't and a 2 stage reciprocating compressor isn't always the best bet.  It all depends on intended use.A single stage twin cylinder will always compress more CFM per given horsepower drive motor than a 2 stage because both cylinders  are the same displacement whereas a 2 stage has a low pressure (large displacement cylinder) and a high pressure (smaller displacement cylinder.  What you have to do is ascertain the air pressure you require and there is another fallicy about air tools.  You don't need 175 PSI air pressure to run that big 3/4" or 1" drive impact, you need CFM DELIVERY.  Most air tools and impacts will achieve maximum drive torque well below 175 PSI, in fact, I rum my system at 135 PSI.and my 3/4" IR will bust a truck stud right off, right now.Lowering the PSI not only uses less juice to pump up the holding tanks, the air is cooler so it contains less moisture and the compressors last longer because the hotter the compressed air is, the nore carbon gets built up on the disc valves that eventually leads to a non-compressing, compressor and a valve change.I started out with a single CH twin single stage 5 horsepower wired 220, bought another of the same type and size and siamesed them together with staggered pressure cutoff.  for a total of 22CFM at 135 PSI.  When I added the plasma table and an air operated CNC machining center, I added a third Quincy QP vertical 2 stage 7.5 horsepower cut back to my 135 PSI system pressure so I now have almost 40 CFM at 135 PSI if I need it fror the machines or the sandblaster plus I have over 150 gallons of air storage, not including the system piping which is all 1" black pipe mains and 3'4" drops across 2 seperate shops. For normal use, once the system is at 135 PSI, no one compressor is running hot (output air to storage) so I have less condensate to worry about.  The hotter the output air gets, the more moisture gets entrained in it and the more moisture you get everywhere, in your seperators, in your tools.and moisture ruins air tools, ruins paint jobs and costs in replacement parts. The slower a compressor turns, the longer it lasts and the bigger the sump, the cooler it runs and lasts and people forget to change the oil.  I use a synthetic Mobil Rarus Compressor specific oil and I change my oil in all my units every year at the same time. All my compressors run K&N filters as well.  You don't want to suck crap into the cylinders just like your car, a worn compressor will use oil and the oil thats used goes right into your air supply.  If you want to add oil to your air tools, get an inline mist type oiler.  I keep one with a male-female QD sitting by the compressor that I can use on any air outlet anywhere nin the shop. The plasma table has an IR refrigerated dryer in front of it and a Motorguard cannister filter on the plasma to catch every drop of moisture and suspended oil mist or other contaminents.  I don't like buying consumables that got consumed by dirty supply air.

Reply:@ WyoRoy & SideCarFlip - Really appreciate your compressor "101" and "201" education. Learned a ton brah.  This thread is officially saved/bookmarked for future recall.  There's more above on compressors than prob all the compressor manual aggregated.Mahalo loa nui!~ Ke Koa o Ke Kai ~
Reply:Candidate *USED* 60 gallon Compressor under consideration for purchase ASAP.  Appreciate your feedback/experience with similar unit.Specs:  DeVilbliss Pro 4000, 60gall, 2-stage, 240v, #RA5E60VAD-1; 12.2 SCFM @ 40psi, 10.2 SCFM @ 90psi; $400; 2hrs from homeCommentary: Original owner, home use.  Includes 7ea air tools (impact, air ratchet, wrench, air drill, cut off tool, 2 air sanders, air nasal) plus a 50' air hose.  Selling due to a move.  Offer appears solid, validated after a checkout visit (e.g. tank drain indicates rust-free, operation nominal, no weld defects).  Repair/replacement parts appear readily available for DV units.Planning to visit seller today......if another dude who is first in line and currently enroute does not buy the unit.  Will know if unit's still available for purchase within in a few hrs.  In the interim...checking out the O&M Manual, researching threads for +/- experiences, and drafting a checklist for the site visit.  Thanks in advance for your feedback!"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Lost out on the above DeVilbliss compressor off CL.  Considering an IR 60 gallon, #SS4L5, 5Hp, 14.1 SCFM @ 90psi from Tractor Supply ($585 + tax) - or - a Quincy 60 gallon, #Q13160VQ, 3.5 Hp, 12.8 SCFM @ 90 psi from Northern Tool ($800 + $125 S/H).  Reviews on IR's #SS3L3 are mixed, as expected, and the reputation/performance of the Quincy units appear more solid.  Really boils down to a $600 (Tractor Supply) -vs- $1k (Northern Tool).   Understand that customer service at Tractor Supply is good.Time to decide....."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:I bought my 80 gal 18 cfm single stage IR compressor from Tractor Supply about 6 years ago and I have never had any trouble at all, or with Tractor Supply. Their price was better than any other source for that I found for that same make and model. I use it for sand blasting, painting, and air tool use and have never run out of. or experienced low air pressure with it (one man shop). I added the HF condensate purge system to the tank shortly after I bought the compressor and it has performed well, although I am now considering an electronic unit for it because the tank is left at full pressure 24/7. When doing sand blasting or painting in warmer weather I connect a refrigerated air dryer in the line, but just use an inline water separator/filter most of the year. The  compressor and refrigerated dryer sit in a 6' X 6' outside closet that's attached to my shop to keep the noise level down in the shop and this has proven to be a great idea too. I hated having the compressor start while doing fine TIG or other delicate work. In the outside closet I can hear it start but the sound level in the shop is low enough that it doesn't cause me to jump.CharleyMiller MM252Miller Bobcat 225NTMiller DialArc HF / DIY Cooler2 Victor O/A TorchsetsMilwaukee 8" Metal SawMilwaukee Dry Cut "Chop" Saw 5 Ton Wallace Gantry Various Grinders, Benders, etc.

Reply:The search has ended and the results are in.  Purchased a new Quincy 5HP, 2-Stage, 60 Compressor (Model # 2V41C60VC).  15.2 SCFM @ 175psi, and 15.4 SCFM @ 100psi.  Should never need to upgrade this beast.  Unit has outstanding reviews and "Made in USA".  Even has a Miller Blue exterior paint schema.  Now....to rip an FRL (filter, regulator, lubricator) assembly, NEMA 6-50P, #10 wire, and anti-vibe padding for installation in the shop.  And, read all unit documentation to ensure smooth O&M.Mahalo for your guidance during my quest!"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:AWESOME CHOICE !    That'll work for everything for sure. Was this able to be purchased local ?  I hope you have MILLER machines so the color matches.   If not that will be your next purchase. Just let us know if we can help spend more of your money.

Reply:You can buy anti-vibration leveling mounts for a few dollars.   The ones I use have a threaded stud for adjustment, and rubber feet.   For my purposes, I mostly just wanted the compressor not to move; it has never moved in the years since I installed the pads.On the Enco catalog, search for leveling mounts or leveling pads.  $10 to $15 each.Don't forget to use a hose to connect the compressor to shop piping, so it does not vibrate the piping to death.  I put in about 25 feet of iron pipe to cool the air and take out most of the moisture.  50 foot would be better.  But shop piping is a whole topic in itself, including sloping the pipe, drains, etc.Richard Originally Posted by ManoKaiThe search has ended and the results are in. And, read all unit documentation to ensure smooth O&M.Mahalo for your guidance during my quest!
Reply:@ BD1 - Purchased at Northern Tools. Non-local.  Thanks!  All my welding gear is Miller BLUE!  Word around the campfire is a Miller Trailblazer 301G may materialize and make its way to the shop.  Really need a 10kW generator for emergencies....and that awesome arc light.  Ha!   @ Rog02 - Thanks bro.  Looking forward to seeing her arrive.  Also, was reading about using tire material as anti-vibe matting.  @ raferguson - Good idea.  That's probably the approach to be used.  Shop piping??  Hmm.  Was not planning on installing any piping. The compressor will be in a small garage-based shop, within 8-10 ft of the work area.  Something tells me that piping needs to be installed as a condensate catcher.  The physics on why to install makes sense.  Now gun'a have to study the O&M Manual."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:The new Quincy 5Hp "QT" has been in service for 2 weeks.  Quiet, smooth, and powerful.  Way less noise than my Craftsman, oil-less, 2 SCFM, 5 gal pancake compressor.  The installed anti-vibration and leveling feet from Enco work perfect.  To date, only had a chance to run her with my PowerMax 45 and air blow gun.  Looking forward to introducing her to air tools (e.g. RA die grinder, impact, RO sander, beveler, rivet gun) in the future.  The Mighty Quincy rocks!"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Thats good news..... now get back in your shop and make some sparks.......
Reply:I picked up a 60 gallon CH at Tractor Supply on sale last year.More than enough for my plasma cutter, and man what a difference when using and impact or air ratchet.Only problem was had to drive 54 miles one way to pick up the last one.Got it home, wired it up and heard a hissing sound. There was a pin hole in a weld. I needed it then, didn't want to drive that trip again and wait for a replacement, so I welded it up. Had to laugh when I looked at the pressure test certificate. A open and shut case of pencil whipping.Last edited by In Utopia; 02-18-2014 at 07:13 PM.
