Just started doing vertical up with stick on 12 mm mild steel plate beveled out and 2.5 gap and face, using 6011 for root pass 86 amps, 6013 2.5mm hot pass 84 amps, 6013 3.2mm filler x2 106amps, 6013 3.2 cap 100amps. Anyone got any tips on which weave techniques I could try, test in 2 weeks so just trying out different methods!
Reply:Weaves are easy. Just read the puddle and pause at the ends and wait for the puddle to catch up to the arc before heading to the other side. Keep in mind you want to keep your motions tight. Plenty of side to side motions for a given distance vertically traveled..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:as said it is about seeing how the puddle fills, allowing it to do so, then moving across and up to the next puddle.
Reply:Wondering if you are running the 6013 AC?  I prefer electrode negative but it works on either polarity.  It would be worth trying different currents if you are allowed.
Reply:Vertical ups on stick always gave me fits in class.  Instructor told me weave across, then hold for a 3 count, and then move to the other side and hold for a 3 count.   As you hold, watch how your puddle grows (as mentioned earlier)Practice, practice practice! For my FCAW weave, I took 2 pieces of 1 inch by 4 inch plate, and set them in a Vee so I had a 4 inch deep Vee. I then filled it all up in the course of a week (4 nights @ 3 hours ea -12 hours) and by the end of the week, it was a lot easier to see when the puddle was filled. Sheer time under the hood, eventually things click, and you get a 'feel' for it.Focus on your fill. Prettyfication comes with time and experience. (A grinder hides what you aren't proud of!)  You never can practice your uphill weaves enough, since thats what so many places use as their weld test.A couple tips you've probably heard for taking your test: Cut your backing piece off, and your bend pieces (pre and post-weld) with a saw if you can. A lot of students used the O/A torch, and I think they were ruining their piece doing so.  At least, a lot less bend test fails were observed once others started using the saw instead of O/A.  Grind the proper direction. If your grinds run across the face of the bend the short way, your chances of a crack/split go up. Make sure they run the long face.Last edited by Daeyel; 02-20-2014 at 12:52 AM.
Reply:Are you doing 6013 uphill?   It works better downhill. I also like 6010/6011 downhill too, but I understand you gotta do a test uphill and there's no way around the testing requirements.  But again, 6013 uphill???Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
