Why does an Iphone trigger an auto darkening hood ?I happen to look at my phone with the helmet on.... and it went dark. Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221 True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:Do you have a APP for the hood on your phone ? I don't know but, when we take our Buick Enclave to see my folks his garage door opener goes bonkers . It won't function until be drive away from garage.
Reply:My guess would be that if your phone screen was lit and the area you were in was rather dark, it would be the contrast of the bright phone screen against a darker ambient background triggering the light sensors in the ADL.It does not take very much light energy to trigger the ADL sensors. Nearly anybody who has one has observed that even the flint strike of a torch lighter or cigarette lighter will trigger it. And it does not even have to be bright white light either. My ADL will trigger just from the latent heat of a hot weld if I look away from the weld and then look back at it before it loses its red glow.
Reply:IR from a TV remote will trigger some. In fact, the manuals for certain ADs say to use a remote to test it.Tim
Reply:Nah,It's pretty bright at my welding table...Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221 True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:I see, well.......it might be that enough extra energy from the display screen is hitting the sensor to make it react.I wonder if shining a small Maglite flash light at an ADL would provoke the same kind of reaction?Sometimes its kinda dark in my little welding area at home and my ADL will trigger if I have placed a 60 watt incandescent drop light nearby and happen to glance at it.And even though your welding area does seem nice and bright, the area in the immediate background beyond where you are holding the phone may be dark enough that the ADL is still basing its action on the little bright spot framed against the darker back drop.
Reply:Maybe the helmet could sense you were about to do something dumb on facebook or twitter and is trying to protect you.... Also, I'm about to go out to the garage and try this with my speedglas!
Reply:On a side note, you sure look handsome with that hood down.

Reply:Mine will go off when there's a strobe light in the area. It's a pain in the arse if there's a boom lift or something like that around when I'm welding. I can have the hood facing away form the light and it will still go off.
Reply:Some advanced hoods can be triggered by the presence of electrical fields. Something to do with TIG?
Reply:my old miller digital elite had 'X-Mode'. I was supposed to pick up on the magnetic field from the leads.
Reply:My guess is that the because the iPhone's display is scanning, the hood is essentially seeing flashes of light on each scan line. Like a strobe light.
Reply:I tried today, and my 9000x is not affected by my iPhone 4s. |
