forgot about this message board.. havent browsed in quite awhile. anyways, a few months ago we built a tower for a crane @ the FPL (florida power and light) nuclear powerplant. it was a temporary tower, which would be clamped to a concrete slab. in the photos you dont see the clamps, but they were about 5ft tall. bolt to the bottom of the base ring. we went through well over 1000lbs of rod. procedure called for 7018. all full pen welds. my uncle (owner of the company) actually had to come up with a weld procedure for the top ring that the crane actually bolted to, because it was a foreign metal. thats another story. but it was a fun month at 75hrs a week.. originally we were supposed to start fab in november 2011. after the company revised, and revised drawings again and again, we got to work early january. and they WOULD NOT under any circumstance move their finish date. but we pulled it off. its a palfinger crane that gets bolted to it. Reply:the nice side of the customer causing the delay and not wishing to move the end date is you get to get paid for acceleration..hope unkie got em good...,
Reply:In some ways I'm a bit surprised that they were using 7018, but if that's what was spec'd by the engineer, than that's what you use. A friend of mine works exclusively on cranes and for the most part he uses nothing lower than 8018 and many times it even higher tensile strength rods. Most of his high volume work is all done with high tensile solid wire in mig even on site..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:they had a guy fly out here and stay in FL and watch our progress every day. it had to be machine quality, and thats what they got. it was a bit of a challenge though. we are a structual steel company, besides railings we dont deal with a whole lot of work like this, where it has to be ultra pretty, as well as structurally perfect.funny thing is, we still havent gotten paid for it. it was garunteed pay in 45 days or something along those lines, and were still trying to get our money. im not sure whats exactly going on in the office but i know we havent gotten paid for it yet.but yeah they called for 7018. engineer got what he wanted. heres a few more pics.
