Today I went to Airgas to get an oxy propane torch. The sales person showed me a torch that was for acetylene. He said all would need was a propane tip. I asked about the hose a regulator being for propane. He said the the regulator would be fine which i believe, he also said the hose would be fine but after time it would break down because of the propane. He said this would happen over time. I'm wondering how long it would take for it to break down and if i should go ahead and buy the propane hose.
Reply:Go buy the proper hose they aren't very expensive.  Trying to guess how long the acetylene hose will hold might be suicidal.
Reply:Thanks that's what i was thinking.
Reply:I have used greade "R" hose with propane for quite awhile and no problems. But that is because I already had the hoses when I switched to propane. When I need to purchase new hoses, I will definately get grade "T". I would NOT buy grade "R", knowing that I will use them with propane. Get the correct stuff."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:I'm in the process of buying a hose for my propane setup. Grade T hose is  highly recommended by many people here and should be the only hose you should be using with propane.
Reply:There is some grade T hose out there that is the opposite of flexible.  Splitting the dual into two singles for a few feet helps but not all garde T hose is as rigid as the first coil they sold me.I kind of wonder if it is the pure propane or pure methane (natural gas) or the other stuff which might be in it that degrades the hose.  I have a turbo torch handle with the B fitting and the biggest esab air propane flame thrower part with an old piece acetylene only hose on it I us to light charcoal.  One of these years I will cut it open and see if it is really degarading.  Another factor would be whether you store it under pressure.  For liability purposes one would think the propane hose should be able to hold up under 50 pounds of pressure indefinately when in reality most folks using the wrong kind of hose drain the pressure out when done.
Reply:Interesting thread.  So the regulator from an acetylene tank will fit right into a propane BBQ tank? All that's needed is a different tip?  What pressure do you run the propane at?Sorry for the hijack.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:Common propane cylinders(20# through 100#) use a CGA 510 connection(male threaded nut).Acetylene can be CGA 200(MC cylinder),520(B cylinder),510(60,132 and 359 cf) or 300(female threaded nut on a 60,132 or 359cf)Potentially you could use your acetylene regulator on your BBQ tank. The difference between a propane regulator and an acetylene regulator is the diaphram spring and the gauge. The biggest concern is that using an acetylene regulator is not a major deal but NEVER!!!!use a propane regulator on acetylene as there is the ability to regulate over 15 PSI and create a very dangerous situation. This is why most manufacturers recommend using a regulator set up for the gas you are using.R grade hose has a rubber inner liner T has neoprene. If you want flexibility without having a tool box full of tips check this out,http://www.americantorchtip.com/cata...smID=XMUMU1700Once you have the adapter for your torch then you just have to have the tip you want to use and they have these for a number of the older hard to find torches.

Reply:Thanks for all the help guys. I decided to get grade T hose and not risk killing myself. Here is a pic of my setup. Attached Images
Reply:OK I have my anti safety prick suit on, I have been using cheapo grade "R" hose for my oxy/propylene set up for 10years. I change my hose out once a year or whenever it gets beat up. If I didn't break my torches down every time, or had the same hose for ever I would have grade "T".Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:What about the "o"-rings on the acetylene torch (not sure if there even are any?) and regulator? Are those going to need to be swapped out with the the hose? Also does anyone have any good videos lighting and dialing in the flame on a propane set-up? There are plenty of vids on Youtube of acetylene but I have yet to find any for propane.
Reply:That depends on the torch.  My Victor's are rated for all fuel gases.  I cannot speak for other torches. No, I don't have a video of an oxy-mapp or oxy-propane flame, but I have tried them out just for the heck of it.  It is VERY different looking from an oxy-acetylene flame. For one thing, less carbon makes the flame much less bright (think of wearing sunglasses, instead of shade #5 welding goggles). For another, there is no "feather".The inner "cone" is very stretched out compared to o-a, with a much rounder tip.  The outer cone is very faint, and so dim it can't really be seen with shade #5 lenses. The flame will also want to form a gap from the face of the tip, and blow out if your gas flow is too high.Because of this (and the softer cone), you really can't put out nearly as much heat into a spot as you can with o-a.  This makes it unsuitable for welding, but ok for brazing (although I'm sticking with o-a, now that I've tried both). There is no such thing as a "propane" welding/brazing tip.  They're all the same. There are tips for cutting, that are made for propane.  They have the orifices recessed slightly (that's the easy way to spot the difference).
Reply:Most O-rings are Buna N or Viton. Buna N O-rings are compatible with both Acetylene and Propane. Viton is frequently used in O2 applications but resists most chemicals as well. Not sure exactly what the orings are made of in the acet reg, but chances are it's not going to be an issue..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:There is such a thing as an propane/nautral gas brazing tip.  I put up a link to them within the last week.  They are fron Harris and have a depression in the end. The reason or at least some of the reason some alternate fuel stuff is labeled no acetylene is that the flame front travels much faster for that fuel (mixed in the combustible range [which is much wider]) and that makes problems.Getting off topic but the reason (not the only) acetylene works for fusion welding of steel has to do with the carbon monoxide shielding which propane is lacking.  I have welded aluminum with oxy natural gas.  I would have to look up what oxy hydrogen could do.FranLast edited by fran...k.; 01-12-2012 at 07:12 PM.
Reply:Good to know thanks for the replies.
Reply:I've been using propane for years. I have learned that many acetylene rosebuds work fine on propane. I like cutting with oxypropane much better, but you gotta have the tip up from the work. I use propane for everything except for welding. The only reason to use acetylene IMO is for welding because it's the only gas that avoids hydrogen embrittlement. All of your welding/brazing tips will work fine with propane. My reg repair guy says sure go ahead and use acetylene regs on propane cylinders but if you do that for a long time and you want to switch back to acetylene get the tar cleaned out because otherwise it can be dangerous.metalmagpie
